Battle of Android vs Apple Apps : What’s your favorite app?

By Julie Smith on November 2, 2010, 6:12 pm

What’s your favorite app? I know I couldn’t live without Teux Deux, most of all, and Hootsuite for my Twitter and Facebook accounts and Gmail for my email, of course. All three of those are synced with my laptop and work seamlessly. Teux Deux is the newest app for me (besides the FEI list); it’s the to-do list I’ve always been looking for–it’s so simple and so nice to look at, I’m in danger of knowing what to next!

Kids Asking For Apps For Christmas?

Adults of today are very much crazy about the new technology gadgets that seem to be coming out each and every day, but kids also seem to be following in their elders footsteps. Children nowadays don’t ask for simple toys as gifts. Instead, they pine over getting an iPod Touch or an iPad, or which ever happens to be the newest trend on the market.

IPod Sales

If you are looking for the hottest iPod sales at locations such as Best Buy (NYSE: BBY) or Target (NYSE: TGT) you have arrived at the best place. The Christmas season is here and right now is the best time to buy iPod at stores—there are massive bargains at all major retailers on the popular products of the year. We have gathered the latest stories, bargains & info on this site so that you don’t need to spend countless hours looking for the hottest iPod sale around.

Google Integrated Payments

Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) would love nothing more than to integrate purchase processing directly into the apps they offer via the Android Market. And it’s possible that the new Gingerbread Android OS release could be including this feature. In-app purchasing would allow developers to earn more revenue from their apps, and in turn encourage more developers to submit more apps. Likewise, in-app purchasing would be great for end users since they wouldn’t be redirected off the app and to the market.

The8pen App

The8pen completely turns the old-fashioned sequence of rows of thekeyboard on its head. Rather, it opts for an X-shaped layout, with alarge black dot in the center and letters arranged along the spokes. The letters, which seem to be arranged quite randomly, are actuallylaid out in order of most commonly used closer to the center, fanningout to least commonly used. Shift, Delete, Alphanumeric, and Enterbuttons occupy each corner, along with a Voice Command button on theright side. The rest of the landscape is filled with beautiful, negative space. (Interesting side note: The spokes of the “X”are colored Google’s famous red, yellow, green, and blue pattern.)

SMS Backup and Restore App

The SMS Backup & Restore app helps to store the SMS messages in either a SD card or SMSBackupRestore folder. The messages are stored in XML format. However, MMS is not supported by the app yet. This app is helpful while doing a factory reset or installing custom ROMs. It allows the user to choose a scheduled time to automatically backup everyday and also choose the name of the file to backup to. Another good thing about the app is it’s independent of the Android version so the messages can be easily moved from one phone to another, irrespective of which version of Android it has.

Google Election Center App

“Google Election Center App helps you provide up-to-date election information to voters and create custom search tools for your website. The Election Center Data Manager will guide you through the process of uploading and validating your information. After receiving your information, Google will display election information to your voters through our Maps application.”

Sony Ericsson

Dahlström pitched to developers that Sony (NYSE: SNE) Ericsson was playing a key role in bringing third-party apps to market, including promoting apps via a dedicated Facebook group and by educating retail staff to demonstrate apps on its phones at point-of-sale. “Our job is to help developers to make money, and we do this by giving you the tools, specifications and visibility,” he told delegates. Dahlström was later joined on stage by Erik Hellman, one of the lead software architects for Android development at Sony Ericsson, who provided a technical insight into how the Android platform is implemented from a handset vendor’s perspective.

Picking the Right App

One of the most reliable litmus tests for whether an app is a goodwill gesture or serious production from a determined developer, or just cruft-ware, is to scroll down to the “About the developer” section after first selecting an app in the Market, then hit “View more applications.” Look through the apps this person or team has put out. Do they seem mainly like clones of each other—ringtones, wallpapers, theming packages, sports-based widgets? If it looks like the developer doesn’t have much breadth or depth in their efforts, you might not want to jump in, even at the cost of free. You won’t necessarily get hit with spyware or viruses, but you’ll likely find pop-up requests, a tricky definition of “free,” and other disappointments.

I just got my droidX. My favorite app is called “What’s for Lunch?”. It’s an app to help you find a place to eat based on GPS zip code. The funny part is the monkey who will find a random place for you to eat. He does funny things and the backgrounds look like Jersey shore crew, Howard Stern and Charlie Sheen. Funny app.

Excellent blog! Do you have any tips and hints for aspiring writers? I’m hoping to start my own website soon but I’m a little lost on everything. Would you propose starting with a free platform like WordPress or go for a paid option? There are so many options out there that I’m totally overwhelmed .. Any ideas? Appreciate it!
