Colin Firth received his first Oscar nomination this week for the film A Single Man. The film adapts the novel of the same name by Christopher Isherwood, telling the story of George Falconer, a college English professor in his forties struggling to find his way in the world after his lover, Jim, is killed in a tragic car accident.

Firth, perhaps best known for his role as Mr. Darcy in the remake of Pride and Prejudice, made the typical comments of someone being nominated for an Academy Award the first time, stating that he didn’t believe that he had a chance to win it, but that it was an honor to be nominated.

Path To The Academy Awards

Prior to the debut of this movie, Firth was not on many industry insider’s short list for who would be nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award this year. Many assumed that the award would easily be won by George Clooney for “Up in the Air,” Morgan Freeman for “Invictus,” or Jeff Bridges for “Crazy Heart.” Indeed, at the moment, Jeff Bridges seems to have the momentum to win the award, picking up Best Actor awards at both the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild awards. However, Firth has received considerable buzz about this role as well, beginning with winning best actor at the Venice Film Festival. He has also received the BAFTA Award for Best Actor.

Firth On The Film

Firth dropped considerable weight for A Single Man. Early in the production process, sources reported that Firth had been asked by director Tom Ford to tone up for the role. Further, this movie features nude scenes for the 49-year-old Firth. He has been quoted as saying “It’s time. One more push against gravity before I turn 50 and it’s all downhill.”
