COBRA Subsidy: Will There Be Anything Like This In The Future
By Richard West on September 2, 2010, 2:16 pmThe COBRA subsidy will go by the wayside soon, despite the recent furor over many Americans not having health insurance. Those who depend on the subsidy wonder if anything similar will arise in the future. While the economy worsens and the deficit swells, the two problems make it unlikely that the subsidy will arise in the near future. Fortunately, people losing their health care insurance will not affect the economy greatly.
How The COBRA Subsidy Hurts
The COBRA subsidy originally passed without too much opposition, but that was before the second massive stimulus package. Although the first stimulus package passed by George W. Bush added to the debt, the Obama administration has added record amounts to the national debt. The current administration has added to the problem by borrowing money from foreign sources. With the bailouts, the cash for clunkers, cap and trade, and health care reform, it is no surprise that his approval rating has dropped precipitously over the last several months. Democratic candidates have responded to his unpopularity by trying to distance themselves from his policies, even if they supported them.
Will There Be Any New Federal Subsidies
The two core issues for voters in this election has not changed. The Tea Party has brought it to light. Social issues will not be the factor that drives people to the polls. Fiscally responsible candidates, which are usually backed by groups such as the Tea Party Express, are gaining ground. The demonization and misunderstanding of the goals of the Tea Party by the mainstream media may cause some people to worry, but the tea party is more Libertarian than Republican in its outlook. It wants government to butt out of people’s lives…and their pocketbooks. Their attitudes toward spending have finally gotten through to Washington. Massive subsidies are not likely for a while.
