Don’t Ask Don’t Tell: No Sign Of Obama’s Campaign Promise
By Audrey Howard on December 31, 2009, 4:05 pmIn 1993 President Clinton established the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy through an executive order. This allowed homosexuals to serve in the military as long as they served in silence. Coming out while serving in the armed services is grounds for an immediate and dishonorable discharge. In his presidential campaign President Obama pulled the LGBT community in with promises of lifting the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy which would allow them to serve openly in the military. In fact it was one of his biggest campaign promise. It has since disappeared from the President’s agenda.
What Happened
Less than a month into his term President Obama back peddled on his promise by claiming the need to confer with Congress members and members of the Defense Department before he could come up with a plan. Since then the issue has all but disappeared from his speeches and has essentially become a non-issue with him. But now the need for more troops in Afghanistan, ordered by Obama, brings the issue to mind once more. How can we order more troops when we’re dispelling them for sexual orientation?
The government wastes an incredible amount of money re-training highly qualified troops because they keep discharging people for their sexual orientation. Why? There is no proof that having homosexuals serve openly in the military would have any negative impact on troop morale or anything else. The problem is America’s archaic view of homosexuality equating hedonistic out-of-control sexuality which is a complete misconception.
So What’s The Problem
America’s view is the problem. If the LGBT community were allowed to serve openly what would that do to the general community of the military? Was there ever a time in history when this was an issue? It wasn’t until 1948 that the armed forces were desegregated and African Americans were allowed to serve alongside whites even though they had fought in every war America has had. Change happens, at a snail’s pace.
