Feds Proposing To Cut Coast Guard Security Off Of NYC
By James Fox on February 9, 2010, 4:03 pmOne of the new ways the Obama administration has found to save some dollars is to shed the level of security around certain harbors. Making cuts in the special Coast Guard teams that guard San Francisco, Anchorage, and New Orleans and consolidating the teams that patrol the harbors of New York and Boston have angered some. And the plan has even drawn criticism from one of President Obama’s allies in New York Senator Chuck Schumer.
Unwise And Unsafe
Schumer isn’t happy that the government wants to take away the Coast Guard presence from the state that suffered the country’s worst terrorist attack, and has called the decision not only unwise, but also unsafe. The 90 man team was assigned to the harbor as part of the post 9/11 redeployment of security forces.
With Friends Like These
Schumer sent out a release today that should the Obama administration continue this line of thinking, he would actively block the plan. Schumer becomes yet another Democrat that the President has butted heads with, and at doing battle with Senators like Joe Liebermann and Ben Nelson on health care, and Blanche Lincoln and Mary Landrieu on his cap and trade initiatives, the President has to wonder whether he can afford too many more political battles with his supposed allies.
However, the President cannot appear weak, especially when it comes to domestic security. If he backs down to Schumer at this point, when he has perceived to surrender on topics like his much vaunted Health Care Reform Bill, the opposition could smell blood in the water.
Much Ado About Nothing
The question that must be asked is just how dangerous this move really is. Yes securing any of our country’s borders are always going to be the top priority, but will removing this special team really undercut that goal? It should be brought up again that the 9/11 attacks did not come from over water, but rather from the skies. There have been numerous reports of pork barrel security measures that have been paid for without so much as blinking an eye; that did little to actually make anyone safer.
While making a fuss about losing a program like this is always smart politically, there is a down side, and that being there’s simply no way to measure the pros and cons. America has never been attacked from New York’s harbor, will reducing its Coast Guard presence suddenly invite such an attack, or will the complaining about it be full of sound and fury, but ultimately signifying nothing.
