Florida Primary: Tea Party Smiling As Guiliani Supports Rubio

The 2010 mid-term elections could signal a shift in the balance of power in the congress. Voters may not react well to the recent passage of the healthcare reform, and the Tea Party movement has endorsed its own set of candidates. Former New York Mayor Rudi Giuliani has given Marco Rubio, a Republican candidate for senate, an endorsement over the current governor of the state.

Why Governor Crist Lost The Endorsement

Giuliani tried to get the support of the Florida governor in the 2008 presidential campaign. Giuliani supporters say that the governor promised to endorse the former New York mayor and then backed out on the deal. Crist gave his final support to McCain. Crist’s inability to keep the promise contributed to Giuliani backing Rubio over the current governor of Florida.

When asked about the candidate, the former Mayor of New York said that Rubio would uphold Republican principles. If he was elected as a Republican, he added that the voters could count on him to stay a Republican.

Payback

Political blogger Thomas Francis said he believed Giuliani’s move was payback for the way the Florida governor treated his campaign. Crist made similar deals with former Florida Governor Jeb Bush and backed out of the deal when it became politically expedient for him to do so. Giuliani has denied that the move is an act of vengeance on his part and has stated that he would support Rubio regardless of the actions taken by Governor Crist in the 2008 primaries.

Giuliani claims he backs Rubio because he believes in limiting the power and scope of government, reigning in excessive spending, and being strong on national defense. An endorsement from a politician who is seen as being strong on national defense issues and who enjoys a large amount of popularity may give Rubio the edge he needs in the upcoming Florida primaries.
