Health Care Reform: How COBRA Fits Into Obama’s Plan
By Donald Griffith on September 1, 2010, 12:27 pmHealth care reform and the COBRA subsidy extension are not related in the minds of the public, but it is important not to get the two confused. COBRA was a method to let employees keep their coverage when the recession went into full swing. Obama’s new health care plan was an attempt to take over the economy by implementing a single payer system that ultimately failed to make it through the senate. Over 50% of Americans opposed the bill that was eventually written.
How Do The Two Programs Differ?
COBRA pays 65% of ane employee’s premiums on a group health care plan. Only people who have been laid off or otherwise involuntarily removed from their jobs. The employee pays the rest. The premiums are often deducted from the unemployment checks. The program was passed early in the current administration. The health care bill underwent an unfortunate and somewhat miraculous resurrection. It does not address unemployment, but instead prevents insurance companies from denying applicants for pre-existing coverage. The most controversial in the new health care legislation forces people to buy health care coverage or pay a fine. The new law still faces many legal challenges in the federal court system.
How Does COBRA Fit Into Obama’s Plan?
Simply put it does not. Many people have confused related health care issues as being part of Obama’s overall plan for the nation’s health care system. The COBRA subsidy was passed as an emergency measure when the economy started to hemorrhage. Republicans and Democrats originally supported the plan. Perhaps because of the influence of the Tea Party, the measure became increasingly unpopular. Even Democrats backed off because they feared it would add too much money to the rapidly increasing national debt. The ballooning deficit and what they deal with are the only things Obamacare and COBRA have in common.

So they take out the cobra act but lets ask ourselves what they left in the bill… We would probably all throw up with disgust if we knew. I am so sick of the dems and repub.. thinking we are stupid .. IF and I do mean IF we had anyone any better to vote for we would… They lie and get voted in then they do what ever they want too… cobra is going to seem like a bee sting compared to what is coming… They want us on our knees infront of them begging for every crumb and from what I have seen so far we are kneeling as fast as we can!! I did vote for republican but dont think it would have made much of a difference…
