In a fight for not only continued control of the Senate by Democrats this November, but his own seat, Nevada Senator has claimed while on the campaign trail that the “debate for effective Health Care reform in America is not over.” In a speech he stated, “Taking your child to the doctor, filling a prescription or giving your workers health insurance should not have to be choices. They should not end in question marks. And that’s exactly why we are working to bring stability and security back to health care.”

Touts Historic Bill While Claiming Much Needs To Be Done

Spokesman for Pelosi, the White House and Reid have all claimed that the Health care legislation signed into law this past March was just the first step. Spokesmen for Reid have been quoted as saying, “this was the best bill we could get in the political environment we were in. However, there is still work to do in this unprecedented legislation.”

Reid Attacks Opponents of Health Care Reform

Throughout the process of passing the landmark legislation and today while campaigning, Harry Reid has blasted opponents of the legislation likening them to lawmakers that clung to slavery before the dark days of the Civil War. Stating, “When this country belatedly recognized the wrongs of slavery, there were those who dug in their heels and said ‘slow down, it’s too early, things aren’t bad enough.’”

He has also likened those lawmakers to those opposed to reform as those opposed to women’s rights in the early part of the 20th century, “When women spoke up for the right to speak up, they wanted to vote, some insisted they simply, slow down, there will be a better day to do that, today isn’t quite right.” Even though several Republican lawmakers have expressed outrage at those statements, Senator Reid has refused to apologize for any of the remarks.
