Jobs: African-American Unemployment Rate Drops

By Susan Thompson on March 12, 2010, 12:43 pm

In February the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the unemployment rate for African-Americans at a whopping 16.2 down from January’s 17.3%. The jobless rate for whites sits around 9.7%. So why is there such a huge difference between the two races? That’s not an easy question to answer.

History Of Unemployment

Since it started keeping track of unemployment numbers in 1948 the Bureau of Labor Statistics has reported only two other years, 1982 and 1983, where the unemployment rate exceeded 9% as the national average. The BLS did not start included African-Americans in the unemployment rate until 1972. Even from the very beginning African-Americans reported a higher than average unemployment rate peaking at 19.5% in 1983 and dropping as low as 7.6% in 2000.

According to a 2003 employment population study  only 51.8% of African-American men in New York had jobs compared to 75..7% of white males. Unfortunately, in times of financial hardship the government does not have a good track record of supporting legislation that would boost the employment rate of African-Americans.

New Era Or More Of The Same

Since the historical election of President Obama many African-American community leaders have criticized his lack of attention to the Black community. Specifically, the Recovery and Reinvestment Act, also know as the Stimulus Package, which cited no details of filtering some of the funds to African-American communities suffering unemployment rates twice the national average.

The disbursement has been left to state and city leaders who have fought over where to spend the money. Since most of the money has been filtered into infrastructure projects to create jobs and the majority of unions consist of mostly whites, the money is not getting to the African-American communities where it is needed most. With the reduction in social services in many urban co0mmunities where African-American populations are, the outlook is not good for many in these communities. To add insult to injury, most states are facing an educational funding crisis and are forced to reduce staff and close schools mostly in the urban areas.

The unemployment rate is higher amongst african americans is because we are the last ones hired. When its time to layoff being at the bottom of the seniority list means we are the first ones to be let go.

The problem is Discriminating towards African Americans! A topic that NO ONE TALKS ABOUT.

  7. Eric says:

I am an African American with a higher level degree. I can tell you that discrimination is fed to us and we don’t even know it. I have been discriminated against by other African Americans. We too are fed the same media that European Americans are fed. We too have assumptions about ourselves. Its a hard game out there for us. Teachers don’t want to spend time with our youth, cops (of all races) are more suspicious of our youth, commercial jails are filled with blacks. Those of us with money could care less about turning around and helping the community. Our role models are rappers and gangsters (still to this day). These are all the reasons why African American unemployment is high. Let us not just blame in on White discrimination. In a world where you turn on the tv and you are inferior what do you expect.

White control every aspect of life in America. They are able to keep this control and feel no responsibility to allow equal participation. Affirmative action in their mind was descrimnatory to them.reparation was no due to African Americans for 100′s of years of slavery. Successful African Amereicans adhere to the system that has discriminated against other African Americans. White people have devised a system that will always yeild an advantage for White people. You can’t force people to do what is fair and responsible. Intergration is assimilation not cultural exceptance. Forced assimilation is systematic discrimination. Since African Americans are slow to allow assimilation they suffer discrimination. Again you can’t force people to adhere to your will, but locking them up and or denying them the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness is just plain evil. Tolerance and acceptance of a persons unalienable rights is the only way to create self suffiency. Self suffiency is FREEDOM. If African Americans who succeed because they assimilated require other African American to assimilate in order to live then they are of no use to the plight of their people. If you want to change the results, then change the equation!
