The New York auto show was dominated by electric and hybrid vehicles. Chevrolet introduced a gas-powered car that got a 40 mile per gallon rating, and Mazda decided to turn to diesel fuel to increase the fuel efficiency rating of one of its cars. A company spokesman announced its plans to use the Sky-D and Sky-D engines late in March. The company plans to help improve the fuel efficiency rating of cars world-wide by 30%.

Diesel Engine Gets Hybrid Like Gas Mileage

Fans of Penn and Teller’s show that aired on know that hybrid vehicles are fuel-efficient. They also know that hybrid vehicles do not accelerate as well as vehicles that contain only a single power train. Diesel engines have long been known for getting better gas mileage than standard gasoline engines, but American consumers have found diesel cars difficult to find.

The new Sky-D engine will be included with the Mazda 6. When the diesel engine is used with the new Sky Drive transmission system, a Mazda 6 can achieve a fuel efficiency rating of 43 miles per gallon. The miles per gallon rating is on par with the current leader in fuel efficiency, the hybrid Ford Fusion.

The Sky-G Engine

Mazda announced plans for a normal gasoline powered engine that will also be available in the Mazda 6. The engine will feature the same six speeds as the Sky-D, but will run on normal unleaded gasoline. The Sky-G engine will improve the fuel efficiency of current Mazda cars by sixteen percent.

The diesel and gasoline models do more than just improve the miles per gallon rating of the vehicles they power. Both types of engines will meet the emissions standards of even the toughest state governments in the U.S. Mazda will make cars with the Sky engines and the Sky transmissions starting with the 2011 model year.
