Obama Fed Internet Taxes: 61% Of Americans Oppose As Another Takeover
By James Fox on April 18, 2010, 9:31 amIt seems that every effort by Obama government to regulate internet will face stiff opposition from US public. Just last week, one such setback was provided by US Federal Appeals Court when it rejected a new proposal by FCC to impose ‘net neutrality’ rules. Now it is becoming increasingly apparent that another related plan to levy taxes on digital goods and services will also be opposed, vehemently.
General Public Rejection
This prediction is built on recent consensus of general public who overwhelmingly rejected the idea. According to Rasmussen Report, 61% Americans oppose such taxes whereas only 20% are in favor of internet tax. As expected, regular internet users are more inclined to resist oncoming FCC regulation. Unless overruled, mostly young and middle aged Public will be affected due to their regular use of internet. Quiet interestingly, more women are opposed to Federal internet taxes as compared to men. This attitude may be reasonably explained by women’s tendency to use internet for shopping purposes. Similarly, opposition to Federal internet tax is higher among Public sector employees rather than those employed by Private firms.
More Taxes Are A Menace
Such expectations are not without its merit as nearly 46% Americans foresee rising taxes during President Obama’s reign. Also, nearly 60% of voters believe that tax rise may prove disastrous for a reviving economy. These perceptions corroborate other findings where Americans have made it clear that Middle Class America already pays more than their share of tax.
FCC is once again planning to regulate internet by imposing Federal tax on all digital goods and services. Yet, the authorities may be up against a disgruntled public who believe that Middle Class is already paying more that its share. To them, internet tax will mean another burden on an otherwise free virtual space. They warn that FCC could face another setback on a notorious campaign which FCC seems destined to lose.
