Obama’s Becker Appointment To NLRB Another Pawn In The Union’s Pocket
By Donald Griffith on March 30, 2010, 9:40 amOn Saturday, March 27, 2010, President Barack O’Bama appointed 15 members to the National Labor Relations Board. Among those recess appointments was Craig Becker whose nomination ignited controversy from both Democrats and Republicans who claim that Obama’s Becker appointment to NLRB as another pawn in the union’s pocket.
Claims Made That Becker Is Biased
Both sides attacked Craig Becker because of his current job as a lawyer for the SEIU and the AFL-CIO. Becker has also come out publically in favor of the Employee Free Choice Act. The bill is pro union. Becker’s appointment was also attacked by the United States Chamber of Commerce who issued a statement that his nomination to the NLRB signals possibly dangerous policies that could make it almost impossible for American entreprenuers to compete.
Groups representing employers who are against the Employee Free Choice Act claim that Becker’s appointment and his policies will cause even more unemployment and that his appointment was a political move to pay back union bosses who supported Mr. Obama.
Pro Becker Advocates
Not everyone was against Craig Becker’s appointment. The American Rights at Work group praised his nomination as a staunch advocate of workers rights. Their executive director Kimberly Freeman Brown said that such an advocate for workers rights was especially important in a time when jobs are scarce. Another advocate in favor of Craig Becker’s appointment is Amy Dean who has been head of the AFL-CIO Labor Council in Silicon Valley. She is quoted in the Huffington Post as claiming that Becker has the experience required for making the NLRB a fully functioning Board. The Board has not had any significant interest shown to it in over five years and members are praising Mr. Obama’s interest in it.
