Pentagon Worker Greg Bergerson Sells Gov Secrets To Chinese Spy

Gregg Bergersen, civilian employee of the Pentagon, was videotaped selling US secrets to a spy for China.  The case reveals the growing belief that China represents the US’s top espionage threat.

Caught On Tape

Bergersen was a civilian employee at the Pentagon with high-security clearance. The FBI taped him taking money from Chinese spy, Tai Shen Kuo. For around $2,000 Bergersen agreed to let Kuo look at sensitive documents. Information in those documents included classified plans for a command and control system for Taiwan and the types of weapons Taiwan bought from the US. Bergersen had no illusions about what he was doing; he can be heard on the tape saying he was reticent to let Kuo see the documents because they were classified. He also admitted that if he got caught, he’d go to jail. He was right. Bergersen is now serving a federal prison sentence of almost 5 years. Kuo was sentenced to 15 years for espionage. Upon seeing the tape and other evidence, both men pleaded guilty to the charges.

 

US Intelligence Officials Aware

Counter-intelligence officer Michelle Van Cleave proclaims that the Chinese represent the biggest espionage threat to the US, considering how much effort they expend on spying on America and what little attention America focuses on them. Van Cleave should know. From 2003 to 2006 she coordinated the search for foreign spies in the US. She says that China has targeted nearly every technology on the US’s control technology list, including the designs of all the nuclear weapons in the US arsenal, which they’ve had for years. And China has recently been going after much more. She likens the US to a candy store for China and others.
