President Obama’s Health Care Reform & Why it Rocks
By James Fox on March 20, 2010, 7:30 amThere are few issues in today’s political arena that are as volatile, as heated, or as important as the issue of health care reform. People from all walks of life, from every socio-economic circle, and from both major political parties, as well as several minor ones, seem to all have something to say – at great length, whether anyone actually wants to listen to them or not. But what’s the big deal, really? It’s pretty obvious that health care in America is one of the worst in Western society; why all this fussing and hollering about it?
What It’s All About
Well, here you have it – a brief (and not at all biased!) overview of President Obama’s proposed Health Care Reform package, as well as a few opinions as to why the troubled Republican Party wants to squash it like a bug. The proposed reform package is intended to do one primary thing, in several ways: Save Americans money. That’s pretty much it. The way it is going to do that is by giving people who already have health insurance more security and stability with their provider, by putting a price cap on out-of-pocket expenses, preventing the insurance providers from dropping coverage on people when they get sick (which is the reason why we have insurance in the first place), and eliminating all the extra charges for preventative care, such as flu shots. It will also help people who don’t have any insurance to get coverage more easily, by ending discriminating practices against people who have most pre-existing conditions, and by creating a comprehensive insurance marketplace, where individuals and small businesses can compare insurance quotes, just like we already do for car insurance, and make sure they are getting the best deal for their money. There are several other things that the reform package will do for ‘the little guy’, but this is only a brief overview.
Why Republicans Are Against Health Care Reform
There is, again, only one reason why the Republican Party is so rabidly opposed to health care reform: it will save Americans money. Why would they not want us to save money on our health insurance? Because most of the health care companies are either owned by members of the Republican Party, or pay a large amount of money into getting Republicans re-elected! For them, it’s a very simple concept: if Americans get health care for less money, insurance companies can’t pay the Republicans as much money. That’s really all there is to it!

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and both sides have legitimate reasons to either oppose it or to vote for health care reform. The bottom line is that the U.S. government is set-up to help the American citizens and American businesses. I just saw on the news a tea-party protester with a sign saying, Stop socializing America, and don’t mess with my medicare. Duh? Medicare is a social program the benefits a small fraction of the American population. Idiots!! Or reading a comment here saying, that passing this health care bill and making it mandatory for every American to pay for health care is unconstitutional. So, I guess when I get my paid wages and my employer takes out money for the mandatory Social Security and medicare taxes (That is considered a social program),I shouldn’t pay for it because it’s unconstitutional? Or when the government made it mandatory for all American vehicles sold to have air-bags, it was unconstitutional? Or, that I should drop my car insurance, even though it’s mandatory, because it’s unconstitutional? Do you hear yourself?
If you are a true Democratic or Republican with a Christian Faith, just believe in the faith that this health care bill is about helping those less fortunate (Isn’t that what Jesus and god would want) and to help all Americans in not becoming bankrupt from unnecessary and astronomical health care costs. It’s so sad that we live in a country where it’s all about the me, me, me, and not about being compassionate towards human life. This benefits everyone, and morally it is the right thing to do. By the way, I am a registered Republican who has traveled all over the world and our country is suppose to be the best but we have the worst health care in the world. It bothers me when you have countries like Cuba and Ecuador, which are considered third world countries, have better health care than America. We’re suppose to be a world leader. And how about the pill popping rush Limbaugh who states that he will go to the Socialistic country of Costa Rica and live there if the health care bill passes. Good riddance. Rush, enjoy the government run dominoes games in Costa Rica. Wake-up America. Don’t let big business run your life, you decide on running your life and faith. Do the right thing and let every American have health insurance. Look at history. People were opposed to social security and medicare, and look at the tremendous benefits it has for our senior citizens. Conservatives who say they are Christians are phonies because true believers in Christ know that it’s all about helping those less fortunate and not being selfish.
This bill is about Stealing more money, it is estimated to cost $940 billion dollars over 10 years that means with roughly 300 million people it’s $3,133 for 10 years of health care? Those numbers don’t even make any sense whatsoever! How is 3 thousand dollars per person over ten years going to help anyone? You can’t even have a baby for 3 thousand dollars unless they plan on capping how many children you can have! This money cannot realisticly provide jack for everyone so the question is really where is the money going to go? It seems apparent to me that we cannot trust this administration any more than any others. We are about to be robbed, everything they say is smoke and mirrors to misguide and confuse us leaving us in chaos for them to rob our futures blind. It’s not republican or democrat anymore it’s one mafia or the other.
PFC Issac H. Staples Jr. currently still in Iraq. United States Army.
Good article. Everything’s true except the fact that there’s more than one reason the Republicans oppose it.
Another major reason the Republicans oppose the health bill is their own political gain, because the Democrats will get “credit” for saving people’s lives, reducing their costs, increasing their security of not losing everything they own due to an “illness”. Once people actually experience these things, especially the saving of the life of a loved one, they will quickly remember who voted in lockstep against the bill and tried to kill their loved one, the Republicans.
The biggest problem in this whole mess is the non-stop flooding of misinformation and lies from the corporate-owned Republicans (+ some blue-dog Dems) and Right wing media (not just Fox news) into the minds of honest, decent, trusting Americans. I see so many good people (family and friends) who are so repetitively fed lies from these sources they “trust”, they have no choice but to believe it’s all true. It makes me sick, watching my grandparents I love get tricked into voting against their best interests. Did you know Fox news fought in court and won their right to lie (a.k.a. freedom of speech) to the public long ago?
I wish we would have laws or constitutional rights to guarantee we aren’t lied to by all these sources we trust, thus allowing us to vote based on what our “true” beliefs are.
Caterpillar has said this bill will cost them $100 Million the first year. That deadly to our economy.
This bill will still leave between 3-6% of Americans uninsured – we currently have 9%.
For $200 Billion we could have just purchased healthcare for the difference extra 3% who will be covered.
Healthcare rates will skyrocket. Why? Children can stay on their parents policy until age 26 – that will raise prices. 2. Our rates have skyrocketed because medicare and medicaid underpay for services already so you and I with nsurance pick up the tab. This plan futher cuts payments to medicare and medicaid and our rates will skyrocket.
This plan is similar to Massachusetts and their insurance premiums have skyrocketed.
This plan puts the control of healthcare administration in the hands of the IRS. Have you ever had to deal with the IRS?
USA is the #1 healthcare provider in the world. The WHO uses “public healthcare” as it’s highest rank. So while we have the most success, fastest services, most choices, because it’s not PUBLIC, they rank us down.
These are facts – not wishful propaganda.
Whoever wrote this opinion piece needs health reform for their brain… The move is nothing more than bigger goverment and more control over the people it is suppose to serve.
You really think after the goverment has proven in can bankrupt everything it runs that it will not do the same to this program?
We are so far in debt as a nation that we can’t really pay for one pot hole without using a credit card from another nation to do it. Who gave Washington DC the right to spend more than they take in?
Who in their right mind doesn’t believe at some point in the very near future we are all going to pay the price for Congress?
And what do you think that price will be when it finally comes?
Yes the country needs health care reform but not one that will ruin the nation…and this one will.
You can’t run up more debt to get out of debt… Bush spent to much money and Obama is even worse, in fact he is by his reckless behavior of tax and spend going to make our nation a nation of slaves…
You would think that he would be the first one in line to be against slavery of any kind.
The only way to fix health care is to drive the cost down. Insurance companies are not the evil empire builders here, its our own goverment that drives up the cost of almost everything. It is the goverment that has the microphone and is pointing and screaming at everyone but themselves. I say vote them all out of office.
I say we have term limits for all of them.
I say you should only be a senator for six years and your out.
I say you should only be president one terms for six years and your out.
I say that Judges should have terms limts of 12 years and then they are out.
I say your should only be a congress person for four years and your out.
None of them should be running for office while in office. They should work full for the people and go home. We need to clean up the system that is the cause of corruption and the thrist for power.
I say a nation should never be able to spend more than you take in. I say you don’t have the right to place anyone else in debt of any kind.
Its like watching someone take your credits card run up a debt that you can’t pay but have to and they walk away from it and say whoops I guess I was wrong… oh well… sorry!
I say we should have tort reform and if someone sues you and they lose they should pay for your legal fees to defend yourself.
I say we shouldn’t go to war with out the vote of congress so nobody can weasle out and point the finger if a war doesnt go exactly as planned.
I say everyone should pay taxes and they only fair way is to have a flat percentage that all Americans pay. Nobody should live tax free we all must pay our way.
I say that we should have a smaller goverment that is pro-American business but has the regulations in place to prevent greed.
I say that we should have fair and equal trade with other nations, and what they tax on our products going to them is what we tax on their products coming to us.
I believe that unions should have the power to take away the right of an American to vote for a union or against a union in a private ballot. The right to privacy of your person vote is an American right.
I believe if we get a country we don’t want its because we sat around and watched it happen and did nothing.
So if you are doing nothing and saying nothing then don’t complain about what Washington DC is doing to your country and your life.
Otherwise get informed, stay informed and fight for your personal freedom’s because Washington DC is becoming the new slave owners of us all.
I have come to the conclusion that people against this insurance reform are ill-informed, out of touch with reality and/or just plain dumb.
I am sick of the lies, people..like:
“The polls show that an overwhelming majority of Americans are against this bill” WHAT ARE YOU SMOKING???—OR BETTER YET–IS THIS A POLL CONDUCTED BY GLENN BECK ASKING 150 REPUBLICANS IN ORANGE COUNTY CA?? Why don’t you actually read all the polls and compare them before you make idiotic statement like this?
And then there is the pseudo economist who states (as if it is fact): “Then you come to the question of taking others money in order to give it to others, which is what a Tax is”
HOW ABOUT THIS MR> PHD: “Then you come to the question of taking others money in order to give it to themselves, like insurance companies raising their rates 55% per year and stealing 16.2% of our income every year which is what a ‘redistribution of wealth’ really is”
Maybe you want a country where there are no taxes…and ergo no government?? That would mean every man for himself…no services no laws… no justice …that your idea of a perfect world??
FDR made a speech right before he died. It describes the America I grew up in and the America I want back from the deregulated greed that tookover this country starting with Reagan. If you disagree, you are cordially invited to go start you own dictatorship elsewhere and happily sc–w eachother over with greed ad infinitum:
It is our duty now to begin to lay the plans and determine the strategy for the winning of a lasting peace and the establishment of an American standard of living higher than ever before known. We cannot be content, no matter how high that general standard of living may be, if some fraction of our people—whether it be one-third or one-fifth or one-tenth—is ill-fed, ill-clothed, ill-housed, and insecure.
This Republic had its beginning, and grew to its present strength, under the protection of certain inalienable political rights—among them the right of free speech, free press, free worship, trial by jury, freedom from unreasonable searches and seizures. They were our rights to life and liberty.
As our nation has grown in size and stature, however—as our industrial economy expanded—these political rights proved inadequate to assure us equality in the pursuit of happiness.
We have come to a clear realization of the fact that true individual freedom cannot exist without economic security and independence. “Necessitous men are not free men.” People who are hungry and out of a job are the stuff of which dictatorships are made.
In our day these economic truths have become accepted as self-evident. We have accepted, so to speak, a second Bill of Rights under which a new basis of security and prosperity can be established for all—regardless of station, race, or creed.
Among these are:
The right to a useful and remunerative job in the industries or shops or farms or mines of the nation;
The right to earn enough to provide adequate food and clothing and recreation;
The right of every farmer to raise and sell his products at a return which will give him and his family a decent living;
The right of every businessman, large and small, to trade in an atmosphere of freedom from unfair competition and domination by monopolies at home or abroad;
The right of every family to a decent home;
The right to adequate medical care and the opportunity to achieve and enjoy good health;
The right to adequate protection from the economic fears of old age, sickness, accident, and unemployment;
The right to a good education.
All of these rights spell security. And after this war is won we must be prepared to move forward, in the implementation of these rights, to new goals of human happiness and well-being.
America’s own rightful place in the world depends in large part upon how fully these and similar rights have been carried into practice for our citizens.
Ok so paragraph one says that everyone has something to say weather we want to hear it or not. Paragraph two simply shows what a moron James Fox is. If only HE had written the heath care reform bill it wouldn’t be almost 3000 pages of dribble. Instead it would have been one paragraph of liberal crap. if I had only realized James had the truth wrapped up in one simple paragraph. Yes James I’m a conservative and you’re a idiot, I could change parties if I wished. You will clearly always be this stupid and narrow minded.”If you are not a liberal before the age of 30, you have no heart. If you are not a conservative after the age of 30, you have no head”. Sir Winston Churchill
For all who feel that they should not have to buy health insurance let me ask you when you fall off your roof and are in a body cast for a year should America pay your gigantic hopital bill? When you get out the cast and need to get medication should we pay for that also, because you will not get insurance for a pre-exsiting condition? we need everyone in the risk pool, sick and healthy to drop premiums and get better coverage.
The cost savings comes into play when the insurance company pays your for your bills and pills rather than the taxpayer. The economy will get better when premiums go down and we have more disposable income.
Where in your coveted consitution does it say the taxpayer should pay your hospital bill because you were to irresponsible to buy health insurance?
The people against this bill dont have a clue how it is to work pay check to pay check(having 10.00s left after the bills are paid) and a **few** groceries purchased) or there would be no argument – end of story!!! We at the bottom are not getting the best health care – I cant afford the coo pay to go to the Doctor let alone any medicine that might be prescribed (heaven forbid). I could quit my job and get cheaper care (one less person paying into your bill, I want congresses health care plan)– people your already paying for health care – Obama just wants to level the playing field – he sees the working poor – Hay – America some of us (theirs more of us than them)are working but paying more than everyone else. –
get a clue!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To UseYourBrain I will assume you read the legislation and agree with the following:
The new Federal Healthcare Bill HR 3590 contains over 520 references to new taxes, 150+ references to penalties, fines, jail and over 3800 references to requirements, must and shall mandates and puts the control of our Healthcare plan administration in the hands of the IRS.
So you want more taxes and the IRS to be your contact for your healthcare provider? Coz that’s what’s in the bill.
This article is full of lies. The healthcare bill will not save any money, but instead increase the cost of healthcare to everyone who pays for it now. Very simply, Obama’s plan is a welfare form of healthcare, where some people get healthcare as a handout from the govt, and everyone else gets taxed heavily, has their medicare benefits reduced, and lose jobs due to heavy taxes on businesses. Obama’s solution for providing healthcare is new heavy taxation on people who are already paying for healthcare, either personally or through their job benefits. Obama’s solution hurts the economy and hurts medicare which is already approaching bankruptcy. It will also increase the booming national debt, although democrats have hid this by budgetary gimmicks and manipulation. There is no savings, not a penny. Costs will go up.
Although there are may be similarities between health insurance and car insurance (i.e. that it should serve to protect one from financial catastrophe), one that has been misrepresented here is that it is constitutional based on the fact that the government requires car insurance. This is of course mandated at the state level, not the federal level, and therefore arguing the constitutionality of something when comparing a State constitution to the federal constitution seems to be apples and oranges to me.
Re: American healthcare system
We DO provide the highest quality healthcare services. We rank so low because we’re not “universal”. But, the treatment options available in the US are the worlds best. When you see statistics such as our high infant mortality rate, that’s a result of how we report our infant mortality as opposed to other countries. E.g. if we attempt to save an extremely premature child and fail, we count that as an infant mortality. There are other countries which will not report something as infant mortality unless the child has been alive for one month already! Obviously, this is an apples to oranges comparison.
The bottom line is, without a doubt, we’ve got the most advanced medical treatment in the world and if you are to be treated anywhere, you want to be treated in the US. Our outcomes are top notch. Our problem comes from all of the ridiculous paperwork and from the fact that we have fairly large portions of our society that are uninsured (including the immigrant populations).
Please don’t be a fool and misunderstand a WHO “ranking” and then spread the misunderstanding.
If this bill passes it is going to start a political war in America. Republicans will make great gains in the 2010 election and obama will fail in his next election. Everything else that obama wants to do will be blocked. That’s what you get for creating a massive bill that most people don’t want. He should have done it the correct way: by including both parties in writing it, like he said that he would. He’s a liar (no surprise).
don’t see Fox here defending his piece or debating? Like I said…..he can’t be that dumb can he?
Forest: very thoughtful and love the “miss me now” statement for Bush….lets just say if Bush hadn’t gone to Iraq…..we’d likely have a republican in office. He would be viewed very different.
Your thoughts on the market though are a bit off because insurance is not really an open market. You cannot buy insurance across state lines for health insurance and not all doctors spend that much time in school and they charge highly variable rates, however, since most people are covered by insurance and don’t pay their own bills…..prices have a way of going up and up.
Actions needed:
1. open state lines for insurance….that will put a lot more companies into health insurance with the big 4.
2. Let the individual pick and choose what they want….don’t let states force bundling of coverage…as an example chiropractics and acupuncture are covered in CA….all company insurance typically have to cover this.
3. let people pick any deductible
4. don’t force coverage of preventive….this is something we should all pay out of pocket for….this is one item that will balloon costs and create a whole new industry of so called “preventive” care
5. allow meds to be purchased from anywhere in the world…..the price will come down here and go up everywhere else…why? Because pharma companies make their money in the USA….then imagine it costs almost nothing to pump out pills for all other countries
6. allow many of the procedures to be done by other than doctors….my neighbor runs an MRI machine and does scans for doctors…..he’s not a nurse and he’s not a doctor of any kind..he is trained by the company who made the machine…so he has a certification but no degree…there are many other procedures that can be done by non-doctors…..many states don’t allow this.
Anytime you force coverage of something an insurance company feels is a guaranteed cost….they add 2x that cost to a policy
these are just a few things that could be done….there are many others
I am opposed to it and also for it…this is what I believe…
1. I want health care for all people, affordable and fully operational.
2. I want health insurance companies to be monitered and for them to be fair.
2. I think Dr.’s are way over payed and should scale down and also be monitered.
3. I think the food and drug administration is also is to blame for the high cost of drugs and should be monitered.
What I am against….
1. too much government control..If the government is not wisely using our tax dollars now, how can we trust them to use our tax dollars wisely on this.
2. I am against the fact that not one time has the total reform bill been made public for the American People. This bill is huge, 1000′s of pages. It would read something like this: Section 2 or 3, such and such chapter; amendment blah, blah, blah, etc…while I know most Americans would not read this, for it would take weeks, the watchdog of both sides would or should and they would be able to refer us right to the point where we could read pertinent information ourselves.
Instead government has told us what they want us to hear about what it says. As well laid out as this is…they have not told us what we do not want to hear, all the pages and pages of government control and very pertinent information regarding this bill that we the People of the US need to know to really make quality decisions. I have spent hours and hours trying to find this reform bill exactly as it is written…Instead I have found what has been revised and made public only what we want to hear…
So we are basing our opinions on what others are saying and on the emotions of these same people including our law makers.
3. for this reason I am opposed to the bill until we are given all the information to make a quality decision for ourselves.
Syphon you said it all – VERY NICLEY I MIGHT ADD ***THANK YOU***
To UseYourBrain please move to another country, your second bill of rights is not what made this country great. If you want to be in a nanny state get the hell out. You are nauseating.
well Jane I feel for you. But we already have many bloated costly ineffective programs…social security is a negative investment, medicare cost 2x the price of an open market insurance policy and pays out so little that only 40% of doctors will take medicare patients. Medicaid costs 27K/person. Medicare costs 11K/person. The government takes nearly 20% of the total GDP in as taxes of some sort or another. Where does it stop? I personally paid 38% of my income to either the fed or the state of CA. Politicians are too afraid or too stupid to do something that would change these programs out to free market solutions. They take in plenty of money to do this health bill without another red cent….but once a program is in place….it never goes away and it never changes. According to the trustee that runs the NY Medicare and Medicaid program…50% is consumed by fraud….so why would we let the gov touch another penny? I’m moving money out of this country…I paid my share…no more.
Jane…how about we get rid of the Education department…..it spends 70B/yr, almost none goes to the states which support their schools via property taxes….3000 people spending 70B/yr….where does that go? They give out 135B in loans which have a dismal payback. Abolish it and use the money for the health bill! Bloated!
The main thing I notice is that all the posts to date are from people who do not know what they are talking about. If you want to see the outcome of this legislation just look at history, for it will surly repeat itself.
Thats the Republican attitude that has kept us downtrodden for so long. It needs to be passed and than tweaked. OH Brian Ill be you have no qualms when you need to visit the doctor judging from the income tax you had to pay.
Jane,
I do know how it is to live paycheck to paycheck. I took a second job to get out of it. At one point I worked 3 jobs. The government gave me nothing and I don’t expect them too.
They squandered the $3.5 million I would have had in medicare and Social Security at retirment (that’s how much someone who makes 50,000/year would have in their account) and used the money to make people dependent and buy votes. Our current gov’t is corruption at it’s finest.
BBS has a new high rise but had too raise insurance rates for some by 40-60% – gangster
I agree it is corrupt to some degree but to talk about it and not vote or fight to change the corruption into something that our government was created for, is adding to the problem – fight against injustices and corruption or it will not change. The same health care for all should not be a privilege it should be a right. Other government do it and do it well why cant we??
Our government, ideally, is “We the people”. In government control, I have a voice. In corporate control, I have none. I prefer having the option of some measure of choice. I support having our government restrain corporate greed.
This is a pretend article, right? The Onion or something?
I’ve lived abroad and been the recipient of socialized medicine. This is crazy and will destroy our health care system and America as we know it. If you are uninsured and think that this is the answer you are in for a rude surprise.
> Our government, ideally, is “We the people”. In government control, I have a voice. In corporate control, I have none. I prefer having the option of some measure of choice. I support having our government restrain corporate greed.
You have far more say in choosing whether to buy or not buy products and services from a multitude of corporations than you have a say in participating or not participating in a mandated program by the lone Federal Government. You’re also free to start your own business and try to compete against the corporations. However, you’re not free to start making up your own laws.
You claim to value your “voice” in the government, and yet you support a healthcare bill that grants even more power (beyond what’s even constitutionally permitted) to the federal government, which further diminishes what little voice you already have.
Corporations can’t force you to do anything. Government, by definition, is able to use force (physical force, under the executive branch) to make you adhere to any asinine law the Congress passes. The Constitution is the only thing stopping it, and if you allow the government to start ignoring the Constitution, then the government will *most certainly* start ignoring your “voice”.
You truly believe the quality of your life would be better with government dictating to you the terms of your life, …rather than all of us dictating to the government the terms of its authority?
I truly believe that we can control what the government does by participating. The percentage of eligible voters who vote leaves plenty of room for improvement. We can take control, we just haven’t.
DOWN WITH CORPORATIONS (INSURANCE COMPANIES)legislating my health! their motivation is profit…wake up everyone!
You said, “Because most of the health care companies are either owned by members of the Republican Party, or pay a large amount of money into getting Republicans re-elected!”
What a load of crap! Show me the stats, smart ass. We’ll be offloading huge debt to our children, and the lip bumper, Obama says it will save money. Since when has anything the government runs saved money.
Obama controls 31% of the economy with GM, Chrysler and the banks. With this insidious billl, the government will control 48%. How soon before ALL of it?
If this isn’t socialism on our doorstep, what is?
Obama is like Woodrow Wilson in not caring what the people wants. Majority of the people now do not want this bill to pass. Woodrow wanted the League of Nations so bad that he even faked his health (after a disabling stroke) to try and ram it down everone’s throats. He was a elitist who thought he knew better than everyone else. Obama is doing the same with this healthcare. He believes that he (one man) knows better than the majority of the American people and wants to force this on everyone. Many people who voted for him because they wanted change are now in for a rude awakening if this thing passes.
I have many friends in many different socialised countries and I can vouch that that this will harm our country. I have one friend in England who had gout in his foot. He waited nine months to see a doctor. People here complain if they have to wait 30 minutes. He went and got chewed out by the doctor because he gout had cleared up by that time and the doctor was mad for him ‘wasting his time’. The person who had his time wasted was the one who waited nine months.
Jane
If you are still reading: I do not think most people are against getting health care to all legal citizens with the caveat that it be reasonably priced and not cover every nick you get….any cost covered gets marked up…..people need to be responsible when it comes to preventive care. In fact, we do not deny care to people who need emergency care when they come from out of the USA. WE pay education and health costs for the highest number of illegals here in CA to the tune of about $4B/year! AS well we spend billions on illegals in our prisons who should be exported back to country of origin. And this state is bankrupt! But, the point is that this health spending bill will only increase taxes dramatically or the deficit spending. It does nothing to lower costs or reform anything about health care. It may give health care to others only by raising other tax payers costs immensely. When our government refuses to reform any of the wasteful programs that are heading to bankruptcy(soc sec, medicare)…why would anyone give them another red cent. Communism didn’t work…socialism doesn’t work. On your medical issues, I empathize….my Dad died of cancer…other than the fact he had perforations throughout his arteries between his lungs and heart….he felt fine…but it was inoperable so he pulled the plug on himself…he was 70. But he smoked for 55 years right up until 1 week before he entered the hospital. He had decades to stop. My sister has breast cancer which will likely be fatal….she believes in “alternative ” meds. She could have been on 2 health policies for about $100/month but she barely works and has barely worked for 30 years….she decided not to join. Last week my mother dropped $40K down the drain on “alt meds” because my sister refused to do radiation or chemo etc and my mother is beside herself at 80 years old and doesn’t know what else to do……tell me why both of these scenarios should become other people’s problems? People need to be responsible. Fortunately my dad had insurance. It remains to be seen how much my sister will cost others. Throwing money at a problem….that is Obummers only solution….its not reform and there is going to be a huge backlash regardless of what happens with this bill. A president who supports unions cannot lower costs…..unions are dominant only in a few places in the USA…government and US auto makers…..they make 30% more in pay and 40% more in retirement than the private sector. The pension overhang is going to eventually lead to the largest tax payer revolt in the USA. Pensions will be separated from the governments and forced to be self sufficient….if they cannot pay out….tough…pensioners will get less money and or the pension will go bankrupt. The people of the state of CA will put up ballots to dump the pensions, move employees to 401s self funded and drop pay rates among teachers, and every other public job.
So again…I’m not against some amount of health care….but its a spending bill not a reform bill. They didn’t do even the simplest action which would have been cross state sale and no bundling of benefits with a pick and choose menu for people to buy what they want. That could have been agreed and done 12 months ago.
“Keep your government hands off my Medicare! Rabble Rabble!”
It took some serious patience and doing, but finally the consumer will regain a little more control over their own benefits! Anyone saying this is socialized medicine needs to wake up: THERE IS NO PUBLIC OPTION IN THE BILL! If anything it promotes competition, i.e. capitalism. Check out the McCarran-Ferguson Act and see how insurance companies have been allowed to hold state monopolies for time immemorial. Well, no longer.
Hooray for you and all straight and clear mind U.S. citizens! It took a lot of reading and studying to figure it out. America needed this bill to happen. And President Obama is not a chicken and let’s just say “he took the bull by the horns”!! Remember folks, this is just an option. You can keep what you have if you’re happy with it, no one will force you to do anything concerning your health care options.
This is obviously satire.
