Sanctions Against Iran Is The Blind Leading The Blind

By Donald Griffith on April 2, 2010, 1:20 pm

Once again the Obama administration is recommending sanctions against Iran for it’s nuclear policy. They seem to be stuck in a rut that leads to nowhere.

Will Sanctions Work

It has been proven time and time again that the idea of sanctions doesn’t mean a thing to the Iranian administration just as they didn’t mean a thing to the Saddam government of Iraq. First of all, sanctions must come from the United Nations. Russia and China have not shown any willingness to let sanctions with teeth get approved. They both have watered down the last two efforts to the point that they were no sanctions at all. Besides, even if we could get tough sanctions with teeth passed, who would enforce them? The United Nations doesn’t seem to have the backbone required. Another problem with sanctions is who they hurt. Most of the time sanctions against a government end up hurting the people of the country, not the government. This is exactly what we do not want in Iran.

If Not Sanctions Then What

Iran, because of its strategic location in the Middle East, presents a thorny problem for democracy loving nations in that region. A nuclear weapon equipped Iran would be a catastrophe of monumental proportions. Right now it looks like that is what we may have, a nuclear weapon equipped Iran. While the United Nations dithers about, and the U.S. administration bumbles along, Iran keeps building nuclear sites. If Israel does not intervene militarily and take out those facilities, we will have a nuclear weapon equipped Iran in two or three years. Israel has the most to lose from a nuclear Iran followed closely by Saudi Arabia and the United States. While their missiles won’t reach us, a nuclear war in that part of the world will wreck the world’s economy.

I loved the part of “democracy loving nations in the region” I guess it referes to the us body’s in the region such as Suadi Arabia, Yeman, Pakistan and so for..
reagrding story of possible israel attack on iran, I read a story titled “hold me back!!” A typical
little boy screaming againat bigger and stronger boy: Hold me back or i kill’em?! well it is a nice theater but doesnot fool the intended audiance. Better approach would be accepting iran’s right in nuclear technology but asking for gurantees of not deviating from civilain area.

oh dear, I think what you meant to say was:
“thorny problem for dictators in the region” who happen to have US backing.

The last time I check the only true democracy in the mideast; Turkey, was showing no signs of concern when it came to Iran’s nuclear program.

CHAPTER VII OF THE UNITED NATIONS CHARTER ARTICLE 51 PROVIDES FOR THE RIGHT OF COUNTRIES TO ENGAGE IN MILITARY ACTION IN SELF DEFENSE, INCLUDING COLLECTIVE SELF DEFENSE FOR IRAN IF BEING ATTACKED WITH ALL OPTIONS ON TABLE.
