School Lunch Programs Are Causing Diabetes In Children
By James Fox on February 26, 2010, 7:15 amThe lunches the children eat in school are anything but nutritious and certainly not good-tasting, as most Americans know from their own personal experience. That they cause Diabetes, as Senator Tom Coburn asserted at the Health Summit, cannot be dismissed, least of all because the Senator is a physician.
Government Purchases Leftovers
The food supplied to the students are leftovers purchased by the USDA (US Dept. of Agriculture). They are valued at no more than 20 cents per meal. The food consists of high-fat and low-grade meats and cheeses. All those who have tasted the school’s pizza know this. When you are hungry, anything tastes good. Many teachers could tell stories of how often children throw-up after lunch. Case closed, regarding school food.
Diabetes
The consumption of this food will assure that the coming health care program, will have many patients in later years, due to the consumption of school lunches over the years. In NYC, Mayor Bloomberg is watching what is being consumed in restaurants. He doesn’t care about the school lunches. After all, the billionaire claimed he improved the school system.
The starchy foods, along with the corn chips available, contribute to obesity. Obesity has long been connected with Diabetes. Luckily, parents can send lunch from home and not contribute to their children developing Diabetes. They do not have to depend on the government to feed their children. The large food companies selling their excess unhealthy food to the government for the use in schools is not unlike the bailout of Wall Street. The companies make money from the government buying their junk food, like the Federal Reserve purchased some toxic wastes. Throwing away the excess food will not earn the companies much money.
Schools Are Businesses
The schools themselves are partially responsible for the onset of obesity and diabetes. The schools, in order to earn money, mostly for useless programs, arrange to sell sweets and other junk food. They work with companies, sending home flyers enticing the kids to sell and purchase chocolates and other junk foods in order to win prizes. The prizes can be purchased in the stores, for far less than the effort and candy sold to earn the prizes. The gifts won are junk like the food served at lunchtime.
