School Massacre Avoided Because Student’s Gun Jammed
By Donald Griffith on December 28, 2009, 7:01 amA possible school massacre was just barley avoided in Woodbridge, Virginia on Tuesday December 8. The incident occurred at the campus of Northern Virginia Community College. A student of the community college reportedly brought a bolt-action rifle with him Tuesday afternoon. The gun was purchased at a near by Dick’s Sporting Goods store the Monday before the shooting.
Twenty Year Old Shooter
Virginia Police have released to the public that the shooter was 20 year old Jason Hamilton. Police say that Hamilton went to his afternoon class with the rifle intending to shoot his professor. At approximately 2:13 pm he took out the weapon and fired two shots at the teacher. Neither of the two shots hit anyone in the crowded classroom and their intended target, Hamilton’s Professors, was able to seek cover behind his desk at the front of the classroom. According to Virginia Police Hamilton was angry with his professor over a recent grade that he had received. After firing the second shot Hamilton attempted to reload the bolt-action rife. At this point, police say, Hamilton’s gun jammed. Soon after the shots were fired the college went into their lock-down procedure. Students were evacuated from the buildings, and authorities arrived on the campus at around 2:40 pm. At this point a police tactical team began searching the campus buildings. Hamilton was found by police and apprehended without incident.
Classes Canceled
Norther Virginia Community College as well as nearby Freedom High School canceled classes the days following the shooting. On Wednesday December 9 Jason Hamilton was arraigned in court and denied bond. He was charged with discharging a firearm in a school zone and attempted murder. NOVA-Woodbridge posted on their school website, “Our goal is to ensure every possible measure is taken to guarantee the safety of our faculty, staff and students. We will keep the public informed regarding any new developments as soon as they occur.”
