Should Abstinence Be Taught In Public Schools

I remember sitting in health class learning all about the human body and all the fun things it can do. Especially one thing in particular which seems to be the number one thing on the brain of just about every teenager whether they are aware of it or not. Remember, the condom and the banana? I think that only happened in eighties movies. I remember learning about reproduction but not learning how to avoid getting pregnant or safe sex.

Afraid To Teach Responsibility

Many schools have refrained from discussing safe sex options because of pressure from parents and legislators. The problem is that whether we teach them how to have safe sex or teach them not to have sex at all, they’re going to do it. Educators can’t stop them, that’s the parents job. But it would be a detriment to all students if they didn’t learn to play it safe.

Because many parents are afraid to even talk to their kids about the “S” word they expect the education system to support their silence and their views. Teaching safe sex does not encourage having sex, only teaches them how to respond should they be presented the opportunity.

Teaching Abstinence Doesn’t Work

Let’s face it. Teaching abstinence alone doesn’t work. You can’t tell them not to do it, by their nature they will rebel and do it anyway. I condone sex between consenting adults. As in over the age of eighteen and higher. My children will learn what is an appropriate age to have sex and with whom but I will also teach them the importance of protecting themselves.

Every year more and more high schools have to open day care centers at the school just so their female students can attend. In some inner city high schools, one-third of all the female studenta have children or are expecting. We can’t ignore this problem.
