Small Business: Economic Survey Shows Owners Have Deep Uncertainty

Small business owners may be feeling the pinch of recession more than any other type, according to a recent report released by National Federation of Independent Business. The optimism has been among all time low at 86.8 compared to 88, last February. Taking into account that the confidence index has not raised past 90 for last eighteen months, experts suggest that small businesses are still facing credit crunch, decrease sales and dwindling profits even when the payroll or household survey have indicated, otherwise.

Pessimism Despite A Growing Economy

Two prominent economists from RDQ Economics, explain that such pessimism is not present within large organization because they are exposed to better business environment and have access to better financial terms. As most surveys constitute research from well established large companies, the perception of US economy expanding may not be true. As for small business owners things have improved little. Although, they are not firing but businesses are not in a position to hire new employees, either. This grim fact is corroborated by 58% reporting decrease in profits whereas only 9% have indicated any improvements.

The pessimism is widespread because most small business owners think that conditions will not improve in next months. Such figures have raised many eyebrows from distinguished analysts. Among them is Joshua Shapiro of MFR Inc. who view recent positive payroll figures to be exaggerated because the overall trend in small business is contradictory. Most economists agree that the solution to problem is increased sales and growth in consumer confidence which should act as catalyst to boost small business conditions.

Short Description

Even as payroll and household numbers prove encouraging, recent survey by NFIB provides clues to a staggering small business economy. Such a contradiction may be explained by overwhelming dependence of economical data on large businesses. Actually, small business owners are more pessimistic about their conditions than a month earlier.
