Sony Playstation 3 Network (PSN) Outage Sends Gamers Into Rage
By Richard West on February 28, 2010, 10:23 pmEarly this morning on February 28th, 2010, the Sony (NYSE:SNE) Playstation 3 Network (PSN) went down leaving gamers in the dust. Most new games sold these days require an Internet connection and a free login to the Playstation Network.
Gamers in Outrage
Active gamer Kevin Smith said, “I just bought Dante’s Inferno today and I can’t even load the game.” Many of the best selling games are completely offline today. Gamers are at the mercy of Sony fixing the problem. According to Sony’s PSN Twitter page, “We’re aware that many of you are having problems connecting to PSN, and yes, we’re looking into it. Stay tuned for updates.” Also, released, “Readers/followers are confirming that ‘slim’ units (120/250 GB models) are connecting normally.”
According to an active gamer at the GameSpot Forums, “I am getting the error too, seems like EVERYONE is at the moment… it is obviously a trophy network sync crash/error on Sony’s end, their phone line is jammed up and their site is way crowded with these complaints.”
This type of outage shows how much that the world relies on technology to just work. When it doesn’t work as expected, there is an uproar by the community. For now, it looks like most PS3 gamers will just have to take the day off.

Sony’s PlayStation Network has been hit by a glitch that has left users on all continents unable to connect to the online service, the company said Monday.
The PlayStation Network is an Internet-based service that connects PlayStation 3 consoles to online stores, software downloads and is used as a platform for some multiplayer online games. It has about 38 million users worldwide.
The problem appears to be affecting only the older PlayStation 3 consoles and not the newer so-called “slim” models that were recently launched, according to messages on Twitter.
First reports of the problem began appearing online late afternoon on Sunday, U.S. time, and acknowledgement came from Sony’s U.S. unit in the form of a blog and Twitter posting.
But as of time of writing, around 3 p.m. on Monday, Japan time, the company still hadn’t determined the cause of the problem, said Makiko Noda [cq], a spokeswoman for Sony Computer Entertainment in Tokyo.
“We’re narrowing down the issue and continue to work to restore service to all. Updates as soon as we have them,” the company said on its @SonyPlayStation Twitter channel.
completely agree people have spent thousands on the system accessories on the PSN for games upgrades maps etc and its been well over 8 hours i have not been able to access the PSN… its ridiculous yes we dont pay monthly but we pay for everything else that microsoft users dont pay for and get stupid problems like this…even if this was an issue it shoudve been fixed immediately and its very suspicious thats it has only affected certain systems pretty shady SONY!!! This shouldve been fixed within an hour instead it took you guys several hours to even report you had a problem terrible terrible terrible, i would not be surprised if you lost a lot of customers to that box thing because of your lack of CONCERN!!!!!
This is unreal.. at least give us a timeline.. we pays hundreds of dolllars for a system and it crashes i can’t play anything on here… sony needs to give us a credit from the ps3 store… i would say a 50$ credit would be fair…. this is ridiclious

You people that are pissing and moaning about this prblem need to sell your ps3 and buy an xbox. I am sure all of you wouldn’t have any trouble out of their network….ha ha… You should talk with someone who has an xbox about their nightmare problems and they pay for the privilage of getting online. I’m sure this has cost Sony a penny or two to resolve… So threatening lawsuits for restitution, it’s a glich so get over it… How can you complain about a service you don’t even pay for… Yes, it’s aggrevating but so what… Get a life… If your that upset about not being able to play a video game online you must not have much of one…. Seems like it is likely a leap year bug seeing that it crashed at 7 pm EST, which makes sense if PSN is going off GMT time, which is 5 hours ahead of the east coast and thus the start of the new day there. We’ll see if the theory holds true at 7pm EST.
