Suze Orman Finance: Outspoken As Always…Gotta Respect Her Opinion
By Sara Fernandez on November 23, 2010, 2:48 pm
“Suze has a unique grasp of the role money plays in our lives, as well as the gift of timing: She tells us exactly what we need to know, precisely when we need to know it.” So, at least, claims the jacket copy of one of her books. She addresses her fans either as “my friends” or as “girlfriend.” Although she published a comprehensive — and very useful — guide to personal finance in 2001, her first two best-sellers focused on the “emotional roadblocks” to financial freedom.
Thrift Savings Plan
Leave it in the TSP! Think about putting some portion, however small, into one of the equity options. With annual expenses of only 0.03 percent, the Thrift Savings Plan is the most efficient retirement savings plan there is. There is virtually no reason on Earth that any government employee would want to move his or her money into any other fund or investment product. Since most government employees will also receive a federal pension — an income guaranteed for life — your other savings should be in vehicles that are liquid, flexible and without withdrawal fees or penalties.
Gay Teens
While conceding that gay teens face asteep incline, Orman adds: “Just stick with us. People arelistening to you. People are supporting you. People want you to bewho you are. … I am proud that I am a lesbian.”
Real Estate Market
Sadly, Orman does not expect real estate to recover anytime soon and would only green light home buyers who have both a 20% down payment as well as money for all taxes and fees, and eight months of savings in a security fund. She asked audience members who was currently “upside down” or “under water” on their mortgage, hands went up. Orman advised those who found themselves using credit cards to pay for necessities and still make house payments, “just let it go … you know you’re just postponing the inevitable — get out of it. A house doesn’t define you.”
