Tea Party Movement Backing Kentucky Senate Race Leader Rand Paul

By Audrey Howard on February 12, 2010, 10:25 am

As the Tea Party Movement continues to make national news headlines, eyes are turning to Kentucky, where Rand Paul, a conservative Republican, is vying for the empty Senate seat being left by Sen. Jim Bunning.

Sarah Palin Endorses Rand Paul

The success and popularity of Paul’s campaign drew the endorsement earlier this week of Sarah Palin, who cited his respect of the Constitution and states’ rights. Palin spoke recently at a national convention for the Tea Party Movement; the group has listed Paul as one of the top five candidates to support.

Paul And Tea Party Movement: A Perfect Fit

Paul has been involved in the Tea Party Movement for several years; he was a speaker at some of the earliest Tea Party events, which were held during the presidential campaign of his father, Congressman Ron Paul. The movement has continued to gain momentum; members represent a diverse range of interests, but work together to promote liberty and smaller government, and share one common call to the federal government: follow the Constitution of the United States.

As an advocate of returning to a constitutional, smaller government, conservative fiscal policy, and states’ rights, Paul has drawn much support from his fellow Kentuckians. He is also gaining support from around the country, as one of the candidates being watched for midterm election results. According to Paul’s campaign website, he has raised over $1.8 billion thus far. Kentucky Senator and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has not yet endorsed a candidate in the race, although it was originally presumed that he would endorse Trey Grayson, Kentucky Secretary of State, who is also running. Recent independent polls show that Paul is leading all of his opponents in the race for the Senate seat.

Actually, this is not true. Even Lexington Tea Party organizer Mica Sims, who is supporting Rand Paul as an individual, admits that the Tea Party movement in Kentucky is split between Paul and Johnson. As a Kentuckian and a Tea Party member, I take issue with this headline.

  2. Darryl Schmitz says:

I remain to be convinced that this is a Constitutional movement as it currently stands with as many rightists are hopping on the bandwagon, but Rand certainly is an amazing opportunity for the people of the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

I hope Rand Paul wins but he is no Ron Paul. I notice his supporters (like you) never mention his foreign policy positions. And no, its not because he is running for Kentucky governor and will have no foreign policy interface. You choose to ignore his foreign policy because, unlike his father, he equivicates on bringing home the troops from Iraq. Kinda like Obama did when he was running for president. No wonder he is acceptable to the neocons and the tea o cons.

As a Tea Party member, your headline is spot on. The real Taxed Enough Already candidate, Rand Paul, never loses sight of the simple fact that, “It’s the economy, stupid!”

There are far too many pathetic centerist Republican agenda camels sticking their noses into our tent. We call them “Tea-ocons.” The Kristol faction, screeching “racists under the bed!” and pretending that pro-life means retaining Roe V Wade need to go embrace their Democratic roots so the rest of us can fix the country.

Republicans want want failure, they want things like the insurance companies to continue to rake in billions and to keep the unwealthy at a disadvantage. The infrastructures portion was what we needed to get us going in advancing our country to come into the present but the old conservatives who want to go back to the “simpler times” (ie. slavery, and racial discrimination via lower education). Our country and everyday people need help due to bad financial policy and they are just not getting it. Who is getting it? Big business. God bless America.
