This Weekend: Nashville Floods-NYC Bomb-And Oil Slicks Plague Nation

It’s been a weekend of interesting developments and occurrences. Along with the other subjects I will cover Warren Buffett spoke, the president entertained, and the world turned.

Flooding In Nashville Is Worst In State History

Rain in the range of 6 to 20 inches fell Saturday in most of the state and officials are saying they are in rescue mode until the water starts to recede. At present there has been 15 deaths blamed on the storms and flooding, some were found in houses and in cars floating down streets. Schools and public transportation has been canceled, and Nashville residents are being urged to take the day off. 36,000 were without power and the county has requested people only use water for essentials.

The NYC Bomb Scare

Saturday night police were alerted to a car that had smoke coming from the cab, only to find 3 bottles of propane, 10 gallons of gas, some M-88 firecrackers, and a few alarm clocks. All this was wired together, but apparently didn’t go off. Police are searching for a man from surveillance video in relation to the incident, but otherwise are keeping the normal vigilance levels. When I read the materials list I thought “Excepting the alarms, this makes me a terrorist every time I go fishing.”

The Oil Slick Getting Bigger And Closer To The Coast

President Obama, in a speech in Venice LA., said that the government would make a “relentless response,” but it would take a while to clean this up. Today though, ocean swells of 6 to 10 feet have hampered the efforts to put retaining booms into place. Fishing and other water activities have been banned, causing much havoc for those industries. As of this point the well has to still be capped, and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said that “Efforts to do that have not succeeded to date.”
