Tier V Unemployment: How Much Could Stabenow’s Bill Cost Taxpayers
By Audrey Howard on September 2, 2010, 7:31 pmA person who has been laid off or otherwise involuntarily discharged from his job can collect benefits for up to 99 weeks, in some States. Congress is not oblivious to the problem and they know that the unemployment rate is fast approaching more than ten percent. Even democratic Senators who are honest with themselves know that the policies of the current administration have done more to hurt the American economy than to help it. Well, Debbie Stabenow (D-MI,) has introduced a bill to aid unemployed Americans.
Debbie Stabenow’s Attempt To Help
Debbie Stabenow, a Democrat from Michigan, introduced a bill into the house to add a Tier 5 extension to the four tiers that already allow unemployed people to collect benefits for up to 99 weeks. Stabenow’s unemployment extension bill has only just been submitted to the finance committee. The costing process, which lets congress give an estimate of how much a bill will cost, has not yet been completed. Without the numbers being run, no one knows how much the government thinks the bill will cost the American taxpayers. Ten billion dollars is an extremely small conservative guess, given the government’s track record in this area. The bill has an 85% chance of not making it out to the floor for a vote. Stabenow’s bill may suffer the fate of dying in the committee.
Why the Extension Should Not Pass
Senators and Representatives are started to learn that the public is fed up with out of control spending. They have started to act upon this attitude rather than conducting business as usual. The only certainty in the entire bill is that the cost of the bill if it does pass will be much more than the Congressional Budget Office says it will. The Congressional office that makes predictions does not have a good track record for making accurate predictions. Not passing the Tier V extension will also encourage more people to get off of the unemployment roles.

You have no clue what is going on in the country if you believe what you just wrote. Jobs are few the applicants are many. Its your kind of thinking that will ruin this country for good.
I was in luxury retail for years, my clients suffered during the “great recession” and as a result I no longer have a job. I’ve applied in convenience stores and any where else there is a notice to apply. I’m a 99er and yet I still try. I lost my house, my car and yet I still get up every morning and send out resumes. So screw you and you’re skewed warped view of what is going on in this country. I don’t want a handout, I want a job but will need something to survive.
I agree with PJO above. You and your warped views are what got us to this lamentable position. The Bush administration wasted more money than any other in history, and now the republicans are complaining about this democratic administration’s spending.
After the record of the Bush years you people (republicans) don’t get to complain about that. What you say is utterly incredulous and sadly insincere.
Tier V is needed by millions of unemployed. It will keep the economy from collapsing.
asshole, spoiled lil bitch did youre popa pay for youre college, what do you know
I am a union carpenter plus I have several years moving household furniture. During this downturn every other commercials promises a successful career by gaining a bachelors degree. I now have a bachelors degree. I am not limited to construction, transportation or my chosen field of environmental health. I have place hundreds of resumes and applications. Lots of promises no real employment in two years. I keep in shape by doing boot camps at the local bargain gym and train fro marathons and half marathons. I would hire me in a heartbeat. There are no jobs. The indicator of a stable country is a large middle class. Start letting the middle class educated fall into poverty stability will also plummet. We need this extension for morality as well as humane reasons.
Sorry about not editing my last comment.

this article drips of “link baiting”. it is easy to deny a thirsty man water when you live on a well. Me: Do you (author of this article) support extending the Bush tax cuts?
Author: Long pause, no answer.
Republican greed has gone off the deep end the last 10 years and almost killed our wonderful country. Please vote Democrat for continued change away from these non-humans.
why when it comes to helping people that are really in need these republicans dont see it they only tend to help the rich by cutting their taxes bailing out some banks and etc. They also want to blame Obama for this poor economy the economy that the republicans created.
Ms. Howard, perhaps you might want to do a bit of research before spouting the Republican mantra.
The 99ers are composed, not all, but many are older workers, over the age of forty or forty five.
Some states have unemployment, like the state I live in, Florida, of over ten percent. Try 11-12%.
It is amazing that the supply side economics thinking of the writer has destroyed the middle class, made corporations omnipotent to the point where most are profitable but won’t hire, and has totally destroyed the backbone of our economy, the middle class, abounds.
Republicans, for the wealthy, and let the rest of us die.
You have no idea how many people are unemployed!! CLOSE TO 20 MILLION!! They are hurting!!
I resent the fact that feeding and housing people that are going through this disaster is considered wasteful spending. Doesn’t say too much about how the people we elect feel about us.
You must be some spoiled ass rich daddy’s girl who fell out of your convertible and hit your head. Why don’t you try sometime submitting resumes and filling out applications to see what it’s actually like to even get a response or a phone call for a job. How dare you write about “encourage more people to get off the unemployment roles”! Instead wining and dining on your champagne and caviar, try finding out for yourself what it’s like to try and land a job. You’ll find out in due time that chances are better that you’ll win the lottery than land a job, PRINCESS!
You are out of your mind to think that this job should not be passed. The 99ers are already off the rolls of unemployment figures as it is. We are no longer receiving benefits and haven’t been for months now. We all look for jobs, but since we have been out of work for a long time, it looks bad. We want to work! So screw you, you inane stuck up little woman.
What I think is most needed right now for our country is a pay raise for all Government workers including congress.I believe they do not make enough before ,during and after thier stay. After all they are the real producers in this country, not the joe blow construction worker farmer or woman or man working the line. They do nothing.F them and thier stupid families.Throw them to the curb.I am an Investment Banker/Lawyer and I believe whatever you can own, grab, stockpile, you deserve.Laws are made to be tweaked to your advantage. So some inour industry used your electives to our advantage to get rich, WAA WAA WAA.Get over it and get out of my house.Unemployment is just an excuse to grab whats yours, shit rob a bank, steal your friends Harley ,do something babies.
Hey Jeff, you must be a real delusional upper class asshole pencil neck who has no balls to squash. I think you’re just a punk trying to get attention. If you really are an investment banker/lawyer I guess any dumbass can do your job. The very people you say do nothing are what keeps scumbags like you functioning. You would have nothing to eat without the farmer and you would have no roof over your swelled up head without the construction worker. These are the people that do constructive and productive things for this country. It’s physically weak arrogant upper class assholes like you and the people in Congress that are doing what’s DESTRUCTIVE for this country. Go to hell you upper class piece of shit!
If you go back and read the so-called article again, you will realize that not only is this person not a journalist, she’s seriously ill-informed. There is nothing cohesive in the writing and the way it is written makes little sense. “The only certainty in the entire bill is that the cost of the bill if it does pass will be much more than the Congressional Budget Office says it will.” and “Senators and Representatives are started to learn that the public is fed up with out of control spending.” Huh? I’ll bet dollars to donuts that this was written by someone who not only doesn’t live in this country, but doesn’t speak English. At least not as their first language. Disregard everything that it says. There are no facts in the thing. It’s just an attempt to cash in when you click on the ads that surround it. Nothing more.

With all due respect Miss. Howard,
I would like to pose to you the following two questions:
1)You assert that, “Not passing the Tier V extension will also encourage more people to get off of the unemployment roles”.
There are over 5 million Americans (99ers) who have not received an Unemployment Insurance check in eight months. If there were jobs available and if your theory were correct, that not having a source of income would get the unemployed back to work, why has the unemployment rate has remained at over 9% for seventeen months?
2)Macroeconomic Advisers doesn’t expect the labor market to recover all the lost jobs until at least 2013. Other economists say it could be 2018 or longer. What do you know that they are not aware of with respect to the availability of jobs in America?
I look forward to your answers, with factual data to support your claims.
