Toyota (NYSE:TM) engineers and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigators have examined the incident that happened on Interstate 8 in the San Diego area, and preliminary investigation reveals that the owner James Sikes had not fully applied the brakes to his vehicle as earlier claimed.

Fraud Against Toyota

The results bring up the notion that the owner was faking the whole ordeal. The incident lasted approximately 20 minutes. Sikes claimed that the vehicle was speeding up by itself via a cell phone call to 911. The owner also claimed that he had applied the emergency brake to the vehicle. The California Highway Patrol had to catch up with Sikes and help slow his vehicle down by getting in front of him and applying the CHP brakes.

Investigation Results

Toyota and the federal National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigators said, “We have not been able to replicate the incident.” This brings up the scary notion that the owner Jim Sikes could be leaving himself wide open to a lawsuit and possible criminal charges and multiple fines.
