Unemployment Extension: 2.1 M Lose As Senate Goes On Vacation
By Victor Hatley on July 2, 2010, 11:49 amAfter shooting down Senator Reids’ unemployment bill, but passing the extension on the home buyer tax relief, the Senate adjourned until July 12th for the 4th of July holiday. This effectively stops unemployment benefits for over 2 million people before the Senate reconvenes. Also, if the Senate fails to pass any extension of benefits by the end of the month, then that number goes to 3 million. Already more than 1.2 million have lost their benefits since the expiration of the extension back at the beginning of June.
House Passes Unemployment Bill–Too Late
On Thursday this week the House passed their version of the unemployment extension even though this bill isn’t paid for. This seems to be the demise of Senator Reid in his ongoing quest for passage. In the House, more Republicans are receptive to the deficit expenditure, while more Democrats object there also. In the Senate though, there is a different story altogether. Only 2 Republicans accept the bill, while 1 Democrat refuses to vote for anything that isn’t off-set. It seems that compromise isn’t in the cards either, but Senator Reid says that once the vacated seat of the late Senator Byrd is filled, passage should be possible.
Bill Ready–Senate On Hiatus
While passage in the Senate is doubtful, due to the Republicans sudden aversion to deficit spending over the last few months, it will serve to drop a lot of opinions in the polls. One can only wonder too, at the early adjournment of the upper body, while their House counterparts continued to work. Even considering the “nay” votes, you have to give them a pat on the back for sticking around. Senator Reid will have some more work to do as soon as he returns on the 12th, the 2 million plus victims in this latest catastrophe sincerely hope that he has the votes required. Maybe he was right…when the late Senator Byrds’ seat is filled it will be a friendly face.

Unemployment is not a game do you think people want to continue getting a portion of there pay on unemployment. WE WANT TO WORK WHERE ARE THE JOBS!!!!! WHY DON”T YOU SPEND TIME CREATING JOBS SO THE PEOPLE WHO PUT YOU IN OFFICE DON”T HAVE TO BEG FOR MONEY THEY CONTRIBUTED TO FOR YEARS while working. How dare you (republicans)dictate to the people when and how they will get their unemployment. These people have to live off of that money. Very well put, you speak the truth and it’s ashame we are all just numbers. Politicans have never had to live like this so they cannot even fathom the devastation of living week to week. Your RIGHT, cut off unemployment for people who have been earning it for six months, then create JOBS FOR US (with benefits, ie medical)
These politicians don’t care. While they dine on lobster and mixed drinks at some seaside resort over the 4th, unemployed Americans won’t be able to feed their own kids a hamburger. Both parties are playing games, and the unemployed are losing because of it. Republican Scott Brown wanted to pass a stand-alone unemployment extension bill using stimulus funds, but the Democrats refused to do that. BOTH parties are GUILTY!

I feel that this is ridiculous they leave for a vacation while we don’t even know how to feed our kids. Are you going to be the one to tell my four year old and one year old sorry they couldn’t come to an agreement so you can’t be fed. I have paid into this for 17 years and keep in mind I am only 30. Have fun at your picnics! I can’t even believe you can sleep at night! Your day will come in November were your not sleeping and I’ll be the one laughing and enjoying my feasts!!!!!!!!!

I would like to see the republican senators who will not pass unemployment lose their jobs.We paid federal taxes and we deserve the same consideration you idiots give foreign countries when you send them aid. We are talking about AMERICAN citizens here.
To ajourn early with this issue pending is a disgrace, but is also a testament to the hypocrisy of every one of the members of both bodies who voted for the bailouts of huge banks and corporations and for the funding of foreign wars using deficit spending, and now claim they cannot possibly deficit fund an emergency provision which will help U.S. citizens and the economy. The senate recently deficit funded a bailout of hedge fund interests, so their position is a copout: these are millionaires voting for their own self interest, not the interest of the people.
While the Republicans are out enjoying a wonderful vacation my three kids and I are living in my SUV. Furthermore, If I don’t pay my car note by next week it will be gone as well. I have gone from higher middle class to asking for food stamps and homeless.
I have a Masters degree!!!! But the only work I have been able to get is cleaning homes for friends.
When my husband passed five years ago I would have NEVER imagined our lives would get to be so bad.
If it wasn’t for my kids I would put an end to it all.

I couldn’t have said it any better and unfortunately I am one of the many unemployed in America right now and no I am not a lazy drug head that loves sitting around getting a measly 300 dollars a week actually I HATE it and am doing everything I can to get a job but it’s just not as easy as the republicans obviously think it is in fact I wish I could get a vote passed to make all of them come and do the work I did for over 10 years for one day and then tell me I don’t deserve unemployment because I will promise you there is not one of them that would be able to do construction work for 40 plus hours a week another thing they know nothing about that when something happens on a job and you have to stay and finish it no matter holiday or not but I guess us “drug head” no good for anything construction workers are the only ones that have to sacrifice our time to finish things not matter the time or date are the only ones that know anything about that because obviously sitting in a chair on their FAT ASSES is to hard of work for them to have to stay a little longer to get things done is too much to ask and we do all the hard work in the country to bring home probably 1/16 of the money they bring home every week I have worked my ass off every day since I graduated high school and it really really pisses me off to hear them say that the unemployed are mostly drug heads that are spoiled by an unemployment check and are not even looking for jobs because that is completely false it was hard enough living off of 300 dollars a week and now nothing and to think I enjoy making 300 a week instead of the 1000 a week I was making is crazy and then to say I love sitting in the house and getting paid is crazy because to tell you the truth it is driving me stir crazy not being able to go to work every day so to all of you republicans and anyone else who thinks that we don’t deserve unemployment I can’t wait for karma to come around because it will oh it will and it is going to be funny funny funny because you sorry pieces of crap will get what it is coming and NOONE will give a shit about any of you after treating hard working Americans the way you have and are treating us and I am glad they have sealed their own faiths because they won’t have a job come next election and I will be HAPPY about that to.

What I don’t understand is how can the Senate and House both pass the healthcare reform act without 1 single republican vote of yea but now for some reason their hands are tied without the republicans to pass a very much needed and desired extension on unemployment benefits.

How can we fund a war that is not our’s and how much is spent on foreign aid? But it is easier to say we are helping all those poor people and not helping the people of this country.Unemployment is an insurance that is paid into so when you are out of work you can almost draw enough to put you at the poverty level.They are going on vacation without finishing their job.I never worked anywhere that would let me do that.
Also they bailed out the financial institutions and car manufacturers but don’t want to help the millions of people out of work through no fault of their own.
My heart goes out to all the Americans struggling to make ends meet and provide for their families. I, too, am an unemployed American seeking work for the past 15 months.
In the past, we all could focus on overcoming objections to our application for a specific job. We could do something about it..promise to take classes, take work home, work longer hours, work on the weekends, find a mentor etc..
Today it is a different ball game. None of the old rules apply…. We as individuals aren’t able to change the “condition” of the economy..
.. It is a “condition” which we have no control. It is a “condition” where there aren’t openings, jobs aren’t being created etc… When there is an opening in my field, companies are getting 500 or more applications for 1 job. It’s the truth…it’s what’s going on out there.
The extensions have to be passed to help us out. There is no other way.
For all those that vote “no” to the extensions, give up your job so we can have one. Go out there and start applying and see how many callbacks you get for a job….
We need to stand up and vote these folks out of office. We all know people who have lost everything they have worked for. To hear that elected officials are voting down the bill shows how removed they are from the reality.
Remember to vote them out in the next election. Get them off our payroll. They do not represent the needs of the people.
The names will be published on who voted “yes” and who voted “no”. Get informed and vote in folks that work for the people….!
This year for the 4th of July, there will not be any money to have a picnic. Instead, I’ll be eating canned soup that I still have on my shelf…1 of 4 cans left.

Hello fellow unemployed people. I was doing some research and found this to be kindof F’d up. As of Sept 1 2009 $84,587,463 This amount is all that has been used from the $787,000,000,000.00. Stimulus fund. Now over 300 Billion dollars is just sitting in their bank there in Washington and not being touched. Why is this? Well the Senators don’t want to touch it because who knows why. I don’t understand why they wont disperse this money to their own american people who are unemployed and who are desperately needing their unemployment check to pay for Gas, Food, Shelter. But, no the Congress Keeps putting their foot down and say NO! I say get off your Fing Ass and SAY YES!!!!!!!! We are tired of all the games that the Congress is playing Tired and Stressed, and a little Depressed. All I must say my fellow Unemployed Americans is Write to your Congress man or Woman and let your voice be heard.
I read all of the comments that I have seen in the past few weeks. I am waiting for the Unemployed to Revolt against the Government. How would the IRS like that the unemployed not pay their taxes in 2011 for 2010? What then? I am waiting for a 15 million man woman and child march right up on the congresses steps.
