Unemployment Extension 2010 News: Will Senate Bill Kill New Jobs

It was reported that the number of unemployed people who have lost benefits as of last week sits at nearly two million. It is estimated that if the unemployment extension does not pass, that number will rise to an estimated 3.3 million by the end of the month.
What Is The Unemployment Extension
Due to the rising unemployment rate, the government is trying to find a way to ease the pain and fear in the hearts of Americans as well as to restore the strength of the economy. In an effort to do so, they have proposed an extension of unemployment benefits which will extend benefits through November to those who have been unemployed longer than 26 weeks. The House approved the extension; however, due to a week-long recess taken by the Senate, it failed to progress past them. The Senate returned from their recess last week. The bill is expected to pass tomorrow.
Will The Extension Help Or Hurt The Economy
The bill has been highly criticized because it will, in effect, cause the government to take money from job creation in order to fund unemployment. The money that is currently being used create jobs in construction and manufacturing incentives as well as jobs in alternative energy will be put toward the extension of unemployment benefits.
Also up for debate it the fear that the extension will encourage people to stop looking for jobs or not to pursue jobs as much as they would if their benefits had run dry. Also in question is how the States will handle the money if the bill is passed. It has been reported that the State’s unemployment call centers are already being flooded with questions, most of which are going unanswered.

NOT EXACTLY! If the repubs had their way the money would have come from the excess stimulus. The dems want to add it to the deficit. the money doesn’t come from monies already earmarked for other programs
When would the unemployed see the money when the bill passes? Some of the unemployed needed the money weeks ago to pay bills ect.
i only have 2 weeks of unemployment left from the prior federal extension. as i was recently monetarily denied for another euc claim, i havent had employment since dec 2008. will i receive the next federal extension or will i lose my home.
All I have to say is remember those Republicans, that are causing families to loose their homes, families,starving, by withholding unemployment extension. Make sure these Republican Senators are out of office!!!
The stimulus money is NOT a sluch fund…see the Republicans are USED to having a slush fund…our tax money. It is already marked for new projects…what? You think they’re just going to send out checks like Bush did? They wait, make sure it’s allocated to the correct places. Do you even know how deep the well goes? How much the right has destroyed our country because GW had a “bible” moment? He let the Christans in..he was a recovering alcoholic who found Jesus and now the right wing Jerry Falwell followers are trying to keep control of their wealth and ours. We were built without God’s queen ruling us, without God saying who the queen is and should be. We left that behind, but the religious right under GW put it back in and here we are. Unemployed since December 2009. I have sent out over 500 resumes. UI ran out in June. The idea the UI extension would encourage people to not look for jobs is an incorrect generality. Paying COBRA and normal expenses is bleeding remaining finances quickly. Help would be appreciated

Congress is kidding, right? The 3.3 million people who will lose benefits are going to suddenly find work? Are they to create their own jobs? The private sector isn’t even doing that.
We should have stopped supporting the casino economy many years ago, and instead, put the whole of the bankrupt financial system into receivership, reorganized what remained under a Glass-Steagall standard, and used a National Bank to fund long-term, basic economic infrastructure which would require millions of people for productive employment. No more bailouts, no more ‘necessary but difficult’ cost cuts to services, stop the foreclosures. This congress hasn’t a clue.

The Republicans that are voting no to the extension of unemployed benefits are the same ones that are all for allowing more tax breaks for their rich friends and associates in corporate America to the tune of over $700 billion. Look, I have voted Republican ever since I could earn a pay check. Today I just flushed my Republican voters card and I will get one as an Independent. What these elitist ass*****’s are doing to both Republican, Democrat and Independent citizens, which by the way are all American’s, is criminal. Lets have them cut off from funding their pay checks and benefits. It would not bother most of them as they are already millionaires,but it would make my heart feel a little better. Can we also ask somebody who knows, to tally up all the appropriations that Congress has passed, including the foreign gifts of billions of American tax dollars to very questionable countries, most which would in all truth would rather see us dead,and then see if the unemployment appropriation, that is being held up by REPUBLICANS,even comes to a small fraction of those monies. Tell me Mr. Senator is that how much you guys give a good s**** about us?

1.the lost of shelter ( homes, apartments)
2. Hunger ( Children )children going to be bed without eating and wakeing up with out eating

4. Stealing to survive to feed their families.

The president today 7/19/2010 had a media talk on the unemployed and had several of unemployed indivduals from 2 years to 1 year etc. He stated that people have exhausted their benefits and need help from the congress to help ALL Unemployed in this still jobless economy. It is now up to the congress to get a Bill to help provide a lifeline for all unemployed. The unemployed can now hold you congress accountable to any measure that deviates from what the president said about the unemployed. ALL Unemployed need a Bill to help provide additional lifeline for at least an additional year in this very slow recovery jobless economy.

I could care less which party does what. Give us ALL jobs or give us unemployment. At this point the lies to America must stop. The truth must be reported by mainstream media (ABC, CBS, and NBC) the only person close to this is Ed Schultz MSNBC. How can something as bad as the numbers of unemployed (millions) not be in the news or receive a Google page 1 paragraph. Everyday on Google you have to search for unemployment information. When the truth is told the facts should include ALL of the unemployed, not those confusing Tiers but include those over 99 weeks. They not only lie about the recovery effort but they lie about the help being given. Most Americans think there are jobs available and we would rather collect unemployment. The current bill HR – 4213 is only an EXTENSION of the Tiers 1 thru 4. This does not cover those requiring a tier 5 (over 99 weeks unemployed – 99ers). If and when it’s passed America will be misled into believing all unemployed are receiving help. When this bill is passed we will still have to wait for ANOTHER bill to be passed for us. In addition people covered by this bill may soon become 99ers as well. If you have 98 paid weeks and this bill is passed you will only receive 1 week of pay. Then you too will become a 99er without a check!
The 99ers will then have to wait for another bill to be created. Then there’s the August recess. (another vacation break). This will probably be done months from now just in time for the November elections. By then there will be millions on welfare and homeless. Congress, the Senate, both Presidents all know the truth, so how do they keep UPI, Reuters and Google from covering our plight. The truth is out there.
Everyone on unemployment is complaining about the outsourcing of jobs to other countries. Has anyone considered the problem of outsourcing our natural resources like British Petroleum (BP) drilling oil in the US. Are there any US oil companies drilling in the UK? Also how many other countries are out sourcing TO the US? I can understand other countries investing in the US but what is the rate of return? Do they pay more taxes or fewer taxes than US companies? Do they pay a tariff for monetary gains that are leaving our country? Or does our government give them big tax breaks like the other large US companies that are ripping off this country?
I am upset that congress did not pass this bill two weeks ago! But instead that left thousands of unemployed people and their children hungry. I am extremely upset that they gave our damn money to Pakistan who infact could care less about Americans. How could they just let us suffer like this and give money to help other countries. Don’t we help those people enough they are the reason we have no damn jobs! They come over here and hire all of their illegal family members while we suffer. And when do I get my two checks because my bank have been calling me for several weeks. Since I had not been able to pay them their money thanks to the republican party!

I am so tired of the Republicans saying that those of us on unemployment are not motivated to look for a job. I would like them to try living on $1300 a month…it ain’t easy. I live in OH and there are not a lot of job to be had out there. Most jobs pay minimum wage or if you’re lucky maybe $10.00 an hour. How is a family supposed to exist on that? And many jobs are only part time, no benefits. It’s tough out there and those of us on unemployment are trying very hard to find something.
Don’t let Obama’s grandstanding fool you. It is both parties failure to compromise that has delayed this bill that they all agree needs to pass. The people we have put in the Senate have a total lack of empathy for the unemployed. It was their policies that allowed industry to go overseas, the bank collapse, the housing collapse, etc. They all went on vacation instead of taking care of business.

I am a 35 year old professional who has been unemployed since February 2009. I have worked without pause since the legal working age of 14 in the state of Pennsylvania. I have been paying my taxes without gripe for 20+ years, so I feel like I’ve put my time in and don’t feel like I am “holding my hand out”, and certainly not “spoiled” (nice, Sharron Engle). I made about 50K a year and my unemployment paid about 26K a year, minus federal taxes of course. Is that really spoiled? I am beyond the verge of bankrupcy, I have NO retirement left (401K LONG GONE), I CANNOT find work, and I don’t know where my next mortgage payment is coming from (or child support for that matter, which is really the priority). I am now without any unemployment benefits, as of last week. A part of me really DOES appreciate the fact that these programs has been extended beyond the typical 26 weeks of benefits. Let’s face it, others that lost work before us, and still couldn’t (legitimately) find work beyond 26 weeks didn’t have this additional help. HOWEVER, we are now in fact in different times. It’s not JUST repubs, but as a registered republican I can honestly say I have been re-evaluating my party affiliation for a couple of years now. I will probably re-register as an independant, which means I can’t vote in the primaries (big deal, I WILL show up for the actual vote and I WILL be familiar with how those in my district voted in regards to these issues.) We all have a voice, but voting is the only thing that means anything to most politicians.
I face losing my house, going to jail because I can’t pay my child support…like I said, bankrupcy….I’m not a criminal!!!
I also feel very strongly that is is outright UNFAIR to pay some unemployed 99 weeks of benefits, then cut the rest of us off simply because we lost our jobs a little bit later, and for the SAME REASONS!! BS…..
All of us in this boat need to stay tuned to who is voting for what, and get out and vote these insensitive pricks out of office. Keep in mind we have some MAJOR midterm elections coming up this fall. If Nevada votes Sharron Engle in, they are fools after that comment she made.

This country was built on values such as neighbor helping neighbor in time of need. The economy is still bad and unemployment is at a high percentage. Jobs are scarce. I can not see how anyone with the power to help fellow Americans in need would instead choose to deny them the basic necessities of life for ANY reason. Any of these lawmakers who just dig their heels in with a “my way or the highway” stance are failing to do what is right. The right thing would be to work and keep on working to find a way to pass that bill one way or another and help all these American families that fell victim to this great recession. This is the paramount issue at hand, American families who many have served in the military, worked and paid taxes all their lives are now on the brink of total desperation and destitution . Any of these Senators who do not do what they can to help pass this bill are not worthy of being called Americans and should be thrown out in shame come November.
i had been living on $500 a month plus $200 from unemployment, when the unemployment left, i could hardly make my rent, right now i live with my husband, son, and mother in law. my daughter is being taken away from me because my ex’s parents feel that the way we live is unsuitable (i.e. us living with my mother in law) but what else do people expect families to do? i am a young mother, my husband cannot work so he stays at home, and i’m sitting here watching the news and wondering where these people get off? the idea that people on unemployment sit on their butts all day and collect, who the heck have they been talking to????? i finally found a second job as a waitress a couple nights a week and, i’ll be honest, i cried for two hours last night because of the relief i feel. unfortunately others aren’t as fortunate as i am and come this november i will remember ALL of this and WHO is the cause.

Were are these so called Jobs that we are to lazy to find?? I used to be a soldier! but not now.. Some People would have considered myself a hero.. Instead I’m compared to a stray animal, called a bum, and aparently all I do with my unemployment is buy drugs. I will say this regardless of what happens monday these comments will not be forgotten.. Do what is right for the people of this great nation. Just imagine 12 million people with nothing to lose. There was another i wanted to post but i couldn’t find it. i broke to tears when i read it, a father whose son is in iraq and all this poor boy can think about is his father who is unemployed here in the states. he offers to send money but the father keeps telling the boy to worry about himself, that he is putting his life in danger as it is being in the war. who could stand up to that? i don’t understand our supposed representatives when they are putting our own soldiers in danger and completely belittleing what they are fighting and losing their lives for. it just makes me sick

Haven’t been able to sleep. After looking up Lisa’s info, I may never get a good nights rest again. It’s 1984. We have been so unaware of so much. I grew up being so afraid of communists. Hate that ideology. Someone told me if the Americans ever lose their way, it will be from the right, not the left. And they said everything will be done in the interests of national security. All wars are planned. By all sides. War is profitable. And controls population of the planet. I told this man he was crazy, un-American . Just reading about the carlyle group made my blood run cold. Still more to read. I voted for both Bush presidents. Doesn”t anyone in congress, Wahington, care about it? Are they all in on this? I hrard Saudi owns the US. Thought it was a joke. First and foremost, I want and need a job. Unemployment was applied for 3 months after I lost my job, not by my choice. Within short time I was forced to return my vehicle because I could not keep up with the payments. Next I moved in with a friend and her family to ensure that I could continue looking for work, without the burden of living in a card board box. The job search continues, but the lack of adequate public transportation and employers that are not flexible with starting times, I have limited to the number of jobs I can apply for. I have already lost my place to live. My license expired and also my pharm tech cert. I have no food to eat and am not able to get health insurance because i am not blind, disabled or over 65. I am 51 and have never had health insurance. Being i only had enough for shelter because i could not find affordable housing. 1000 a month plus utilities and when you apply for food stamps it was at best maybe 10-15 dollars. What an insult! But we kept on even going hungry paying taxes ect. ect. Congress does not care then nor now. People are already homeless, starving and without any recourses. It doesnt matter who you vote for, they make promises for a better life and when they get into office all bets are off. They dont care about the babys that are going to suffer because they already are. They dont care that they wont have a place to sleep, They are already homeless. No Santa Clause. They will be the first to tell your baby he doesnt exist. Get over it. Dry your eyes because the big guys living high on the hog DONT GIVE A SHIT! It is already happening people and its been happening for awhile. Just a good example of tell you what you want to hear and we still are strugling even without an exstention tier 5. I have already lost everything and im sure it makes the big cats happy because i was just taken off the list of unemployed because benefits ran out. They will consider that 1 less to help and it will lower the unemployment number. CATCH 22 no matter what. I have passed the point of desperation and know am just very angry. When do they start listening? They havnt yet. Homeless in the USA.

People need to remember that this is an extension for those who have been on it for a long time. It doesn’t affect those who haven’t been able to find work and started receiving benefits recently.
I can’t believe people are crying to get unemployment benefits after TWO YEARS! If you’ve gone 2 years without a job, you aren’t looking hard enough! There are other programs out there beyond unemployment. There’s welfare and food stamps and medicaid. There is NO MONEY to keep paying people who aren’t looking for work! Change over to the other programs if you want to live off the govt.
James Kelso, if you are Native American, meaning American Indian, then the govt is already paying you money every month. You have your tribe you can go to.
I too am Native American, because I was born in America. I’ve been unemployed before and 6 weeks to find a job before it ran out. Times were tough then as well. I had to move out of state in order to find a job.
People cannot expect to live off the govt until the job you want becomes available. Get out there and look! There are places that are hiring. Some news channels report on who is looking for work. Check out of state, you just might have to move!
Same thing goes for the pharmacy tech who says there are not jobs out there. My wife’s store is interviewing pharmacy techs as I type this! New pharmacies are going up all over the country, meaning new jobs. When things get bad you can’t just sit there and wait. Check other cities, other states. Do what YOU have to do in order to survive. Living off the govt, i.e. taxpayers, is NOT the answer!
