Unemployment Extension And COBRA Health Insurance: Latest Summary

By Donald Griffith on July 26, 2010, 7:51 am

Unemployment Cobra Health Insurance has not passed all of the hurdles that have been put on the health bill. Cobra would pay for health benefits of unemployed workers. Although the Cobra health provision of the recent unemployment bill passed by the Senate was part of the bill, it was taken out and not a part of the actual bill that was passed by the Senate. The more than 10% of the American population currently unemployed might be disappointed to discover that their health premiums will not be paid by the federal government although their unemployment benefits might be restored. They might be offered the option of paying for their own Cobra premiums.

What Does Cobra Mean

Cobra is a health coverage given to unemployed workers. The recent unemployment bill that passed did not extend to the unemployed an extension of their Cobra premiums. The Cobra bill that was aimed at paying the health premiums for unemployed workers did not pass and is not a part of the unemployment bill that did pass. Senators voting against the bill are not willing to continue paying almost 65% of health insurance premiums for unemployed workers that would be paid by the federal government adding to the ever increasing and threatening federal debt.

Is Cobra A Political Bill

The Cobra Health Bill which was not a part that was passed of the unemployment extension bill recently passed by the Senate has become politically charged with only one Democrat voting against it with all other votes against the Cobra bill coming from Republicans. The frightening prospect of paying not only unemployment benefits but health benefits to more than 10% of the American population is having some debate in the Senate.

They should pass tier 5 if there not going to add health, i haven’t had health insurance for 2 years now can’t afford cobra or anything else, this is not America anymore it’s a third world country

Cobra should be extended indefinately to the unemployed if only at the employer cost. No one loses out, the unemployed pays the premium (no loss on former employer)and the insurance company will still get a premium. The only reason this won’t fly is that the greedy insurance companies won’t get the larger premium we unemployed have to pay since Cobra ran out.

Yes we need the Cobra discount extension too. How are we going to pay the high Cobra Insurance without the discount on unemployment. We pay both parts of the insurance anyway the government just gives a discount so if your Cobra was $440.00 a month it is $144.00 a month which is hard to pay on unemployment any way. After paying monthly bills there isn’t any money left for food let alone a high Cobra payment too!!!

Sen Casey has proposed a bill to extend the COBRA subsidy and 10 senators are co-sponsors. S. 3548 was heared twice by the senate and referred to the senate finance committee. I called all the senator’s on the finance committee to ask for their support to push this attempt to complete the task the majority of congress worked toward with H.R. 4213 prior to the “Republican Filibuster” and the amendment that followed. Please contact your representative soon. The COBRA Subsidy extension is vital for the unemployed. S. 3548 or a bill that takes the temporary qualification away is sorely in need.

Pretty silly….you get unemployment on one hand..but out it goes for Health Insurance. End result = zero money to survive. No one said the government should pay for COBRA in the constitution..but no one said that because of bonus money and outragious salaries paid out by the government instead of improving employment conditions would weaken the economy to the point that unemployment is over 10% . Hope those who received multimillion dollar bonus are enjoying themselves.

Wow! I wish you bloggers would get your facts straight. The COBRA subsidy has not gone away; workers who were involuntarily terminated and eligible for assistance on or before May 31 retain their rights to 15 months of subsidized premiums. They pay 35% of the cost; the employer fronts 65% to the insurer and is reimbursed through credits against payroll taxes.

But, the “eligibility” period has not been extended, which means that workers who were involuntarily terminated on or after June 1 are not eligible for the subsidy. While I am not suggesting that our lawmakers’ failure ro extend the eligibility period is a good thing, it would certainly be good to see bloggers, who pretend to have expertise in COBRA law, actually demonstrate as much.

Last July i was told by my doctors that i had Terminal Lung cancer but i had treatment and was able to return to work, now a year later i was layed off do to budget and my employer is giving me 3 months continued health care when it ends i was told i can get cobra, the cobra payment is almost 700 a month!
my Social Security Disability payments are 1200 a month…and with Disability there is a 24 month waiting periodfor madicade. I have CT scans and Pet scans that i must have every 3 months in order to spot the cancer when it returns. how in the world can i pay for cobra?
This is a life and death matter for me and can get no help… was told a gov program was paying for 80% of cobra and i began to search and ended up here it does not look good. I have worked hard al my life and i think i deserve better than this

    Hello S. Haines

I was involuntarily terminated from my job of 32 years August of 2009. I decided to keep my Cobra Insurance because of the subsidy.
However, I have been a little confused about how I would be affected due to the subsidy not be extended.
    Thanks for clearing that up.
