Unemployment Extension Checks: The Latest On COBRA Insurance Subsidy
By Audrey Howard on July 24, 2010, 1:28 pmDespite stiff opposition from the Republicans, the extension of the current unemployment benefits is likely to pass. While the economy has not fully recovered, the job market has started to rebound where it was from a year ago. Whether or not this is because of the stimulus package is working, or in spite of Obama’s policies that are not business friendly is a subject for debate. Many of the unemployed people who find their benefits extended may find out that they lose their health insurance. If the new bill gets signed into law, a person receiving unemployment compensation can receive benefits for up to 99 weeks.
COBRA Benefits Not Covered
The Cobra program allows people to keep health insurance when they are between jobs. The law was passed to help people keep health insurance while they are between jobs. Like the unemployment benefits themselves, there is a limit to how long COBRA coverage lasts. Basically, the program lets people keep the health insurance policy that their former employer had. When the congress proposed the extension of unemployment benefits to 99 weeks, they did not include an extension of the COBRA program. The same benefits were extended the last time congress extended unemployment benefits.
What Does This Mean For People On Employment
Extending unemployment benefits may give people more breathing room to find a job. Extending the benefits does not encourage those currently without an employer to find a new jobs. If a worker had a family who depended on the COBRA health insurance benefits. The failure to extend health insurance coverage may motivate more people to seek jobs, even though the current employment market may not be ready to handle a large influx of job seekers. More people gaining employment may help move the economy further along the road to recovery.

I believe there should be an extension for the unemployed because there are very few jobs that hiring .I’m at the point where I cant even get a interview with the employer Ive looked everywhere i have not gotten a callback and at most stores I see only a fer registers open and long lines to the back of the store because they don’t have any workers because they don’t want to hire anybody and now there asking for credit reports and you have to pay for that, I also have to pay for for ink and paper to print resumes that I send out on job searches and they don’s hire me. I know I’m not alone.
I am so GLAD that the unemployment extension has been passed…BBBUUUTTT I am so angry it took so long for it to be passed and you can SURELY bet I will NOT elect any REPUBLICAN to office this coming election….YOU REPUBLICAN SENATORS will help any other country on the face of this earth but you will not help your own fellow American!!!!..this is not a issue of the deficit increasing this is a moral issue…a issue to help your own when they are down!!! so yeah the bill was passed but I will not forget how you left hard working people out to dry and that it took a new democrat to be sworn into office first to get the bill to pass!!! OFF WITH YOUR HEAD!!!
I was so depending on unemployment even tho its not that much i can mannage and get by, i have children and i also had to give away my dog of 6 years because i could not afford the food when they stoped my unemployment benifits. I will never vote for a republican anyway ever. They just tear america apart.

If you belive its a dem or repuk problum well i mine as well just shoot myself and save myself alot of grief…
Republicans very much wanted to pass this, but would not increase the debt. The Democrats refused to compromise and use money that was already available. Read the news reports. Perhaps some of you are unemployed because you cannot read or comprehend basic news stories.
Now I can see the big picture who is doing what on Capital Hill. The Republicans are playing a childish game with the Dems.
Okay face it Repubs or Right Wing; President Obama is doing a great job, and you guys are trying to set him up for failure….Oh No!
The joke is on you, we the Americans can see that you Right Wings are trying to destroy our President!
Get yourself another if the kitchen is to hot for you…..
Dont take this wrong I dont believe the republicans would be doing any better… But has anything changed since the wonderful health care bill was passed the dems where large and incharge then …. thought they still held the controling vote? funny how the gov. takes over health care and now more people than ever will be with out healh insurance… The whole republican democrate thing is beside the point we have started down a road that wont soon come to an end and it is going to be a rough ride… Lets face it this country has had it really good for a long time but im afraid that is over and we are in for a rude awakening very soon… I hope that these days arent remembered as the good ole days but they just may be.. LOL Well that was my ray of sunshine into the conversation !
Laid off employees now make up 25% of the total employees on our health plan. These former employees are well off physicians, certified nurse anesthetists, and wives of physicians. They all work per diem at places that do not offer health insurance. They are getting a free ride from the government with the reduced rates. The people who can afford health care are taking advantage of the system by getting the reduced rate. Governmnet needs to start scrutinizing people who abuse the system.
I believe we voted the republicans out because they wouldn’t listen. Now we gave them another chance and AGAIN hard of hearing!!! The unemployment benefits should have been extended along with COBRA subsidy.. As far as where the money came from there is so much waste in gov. and over paid fat cats, Money given to special interest groups AND OTHER COUNTRIES!! The money would be super easy to find, Kills me when our own gov. lets us go hungry and with out insurance while giving to other countries. It boggles the mind how stupid they are…
Obama/Pelosi should have been working on jobs and getting this country going again. Then do his health care thing. Now even more Americans are with out insurance and jobs!!! Both parties are a joke. IF they keep on soon we will be voting for a 3rd party and all hell will break lose then want it…
