Unemployment Extension: Past Critical Point For Jobless Americans

November Is Coming
For most of the jobless Americans it means that their lives are now in total shambles. Tomorrow the U.S. Senate will return to work as it took a selfish two-week vacation to escape the escalating and heated pressure to actually make a decision and pass something. It seems as though the idea of extending the unemployment extension until November is nothing more than a congressional stall until time runs out.
Increase In Homeless Population
It is likely that all the fighting and stalling will result in rapid increase in the homeless population throughout the United States. Imagine how long it will take for our government bodies to decide how to deal with a crime-ridden population of educated jobless citizens who are just trying to survive.
Chapter 7 Bankruptcy Rising
As frustrated citizens now reaching the breaking point with maxing out all their credit cards and every other form of borrowing power, there is really no other choice left than to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. The spiral effect of that is the unstable condition of the real estate market.
Elections Are Coming
The houses of congress and the White House, especially the incumbents, are likely in for a major awakening in the upcoming 2010 elections. Americans are fed up with government and tired of an arrogant and aimless administration.

The political pawns (unemployed) will remember in November-VOTE OUT ALL INCUMBENTS! For over 31 years I voted Republican every election without fail-NEVER AGAIN!!!
Punishing the unemployed is kid of like kicking a man when he’s down. He may be an easy victim, but you better hope when he’s on his feet again that you don’t run into him. This November… you’re going to run into me and millions of others that watched as you left us helpless. Not compromising on an issue this important proves that the ENTIRE Senate need an overhaul. I understand the political animal, but the gloves need to come off on issues like this. I hope everyone with a GOOD job is watching… this could be you someday, no matter how safe you think you are.
I am now to the point of desperation. I have not received unemployment monies since June 5th. I lost my apartment and I am couch surfing with a friend, we’ll see how long this can last. I have gone to the shelter to talk to them about how it works and what I should expect. I have humbled myself and applied for food stamps. I have two graduate degrees and I can type 50 wpm. I have been unable to find employment even through temporary agencies. I continue to hope for the best and I am worried at the same time.
Neither the Republicans nor the Democrats wanted this extension, and that is why there has been no compromise.The democrats didn’t want the stimulus funds touched, fine. THEN WHERE ARE THE JOBS?!
Time for a completely new party. Vote Independent.
When NOVEMBER comes around, well I don’t think a lot of AMERICANS will have a difficult time in deciding who ‘NOT” to vote for. The repubs have been challenging the AMERICAN PEOPLE for many years by playing politics to get their votes and kick the AMERICAN PEOPLE when they are down…So, guess what repubs, MOST AMERICAN PEOPLE WHO HAVE VOTED FOR YOU IN THE PASS WILL NO LONGER VOTE UNLESS OF COURSE THERE ARE IGNORANT PEOPLE LIKE zizzy2005 and miref that are the MORONS that will continue to support the COWARDS that you are. My friend manages a bar here in san diego. They put a ad for a hostess on craigslist..that same day 200 people responded on CG and had 50 walk ins..ive met with 2 Temp/Recruiters and they say they have nothing..i live in a condo complex by the beach which has 23 units..2 are now in foreclosure..you will soon see vacancies all over and tents being put up on streets, beaches, under bridges etc..they must pass this bill

The senate has failed the UC benefits claimants when we needed them most. This issue should have been debated long before it came to this. Due to their inaction I may lose the temp job I accepted while still applying for a more permanent jobs elsewhere. The reason I may not be able to hold the temp position is that the $261 I received at the end of May is depleted and now I have no cash for gas to get the 34 miles (one way) to the work site. The extension would have helped maintain this but as usual they have failed me (us) again.
I to am at my wits end. What ever happened to for the people. Now it is for big banks, screw the people. Oh well millions of people make up for voters and I am sure who ever voted no against unemployment will remember in November, even though it passes, it is still going to be remembered because of certain Senators, a person lost their home, had nothing to eat, they lost their car, no money for gas or car insurance to find a job, ha, where ever that may be. How they put children and grandchild now on the streets and left them hungry. Scared to death of what is to become of us.
Vote out do nothing Republicans who have destroyed the Senate’s ability to govern.

Just out of curiousity does anyone know what kind of gloves are the best to use to not leave fingerprints? Or the start up cost of a meth lab? I wonder if that could quailfy for a small bussiness grant…. We may need to make some new resumes with the talents we will need to survive in this new world our government wants us to live in.
I think we should ask the military to arrest the congress, put them in jail, and let the military fill in until we can vote for new reps. Meantime give President full emergency powers to govern ..and get rid of this “broken” government.

“Remember in November” That’s a slogan I can get onboard with. If you can, if this passes, IF you can find a job (probabaly not)…but IF you are getting by and have an hour or two to give, let’s all rise up during the elections Hand out flyers, talk to neighbors. I’m considering heading to some town hall meetings and I think I may just use that slogan I wrote! Maybe put that & a list of things the gov’t did or did not do for the people, hand themout, put them into newspapers….not just vote out Republicans…vote them ALL out should be the message. 99er’s have been unemployed the longest and now have been forgotten in all the extensions. How are we to continue on without help too. The President has the power to fix this mess but he somehow refuses to take any action. Why is this? Don’t we deserve the help as well? Come live on the streets with us now that nobody will help us. we have been kicked to the curb and now forgotten. Our government has forced this mess upon us and now won’t help to fix it. Shame on you all!!
The attitude of the Republicans in all of this is disgusting at best and criminal at worst. Long term unemployed persons like myself are being used in a very cruel game of political football that is keeping us from the continuance of UI benefits. As far as the Republidunces being suddenly concerned about the deficit, the best line came from Rhode Island Senator Sheldon Whitehouse during the last debate on extending benefits where he said “The Republicans lecturing us about the evils of deficit spending is like Evil Knevil lecturing high school kids about the dangers of reckless driving”. And as far as being used a political football by the Republidoofs, I think I’ll change my user name to Goalpost!
What I find really funny and ironic is the same person who wrote this great, supportive piece (Audrey Howard) is the same person who wrote the above linked piece: “Unemployment Extension: Gov. Teaching Americans To Stay Unemployed”. So which is it, are you saying that Congress is going to cause mass homelessness or that unemployment insurance makes people not look for jobs?

This is a good article. I’m starting to feel congress is using the “stall” tactic to avoid extending the unemployment. We shall see what happens this coming week though.
We need more support for a chance to get our feet in the door to prove we have the ability to perform a job. We are the American Working Class citizens whom lost our jobs during the recession at no fault of our own. I lost my job because the Company I worked for outsourced and eliminated all positions leaving a lot of us jobless.
Aside from the need for Job Creation, the reason why there are so many long term unemployed is not because we are lazy and are not searching for work but we are faced with obstacles while the economy recovers from the recession. The GOP’s have tossed negative comments about the unemployed which I believe paints a bad picture to Employers about the unemployed which in turn makes it very difficult for us to find jobs.
If this turns out to be a “stall” tactic to avoid the unemployment extension, then America is in serious trouble. Our Government will no longer represent the people of the United States but have chosen to represent the people of other Countries.
Be careful with your vote next time. Not just vote them all out. I’m a republican that is going to vote my democratic senators in in NY. Why? Because I’ve checked their voting record and the bills they have supported. They have consistently voted on actions designed to bring jobs back to the us, regardless of corporate opposition. They voted unemployment extensions. A lot of that that stimulus money that sits is designated for our state and they don’t want it used so they are voting against any bill that touches it until it can be spent.
Are they perfect, by no means, but they are doing what I asked them to do while in the senate.
An informed vote, either Republican, Democrat or Independent is always the best way to go. If your representative isn’t doing what you need to happen, then vote them out no matter what party they stand for.

The UI extension means a lot to us and so pls note the above is just my opinion and so hang in there and let’s see what happens tomorrow or this coming week.
Also, I have a question. People are demanding this be “the last extension”. However, what makes them think that in November, without any of these loopholes being closed, that the job landscape is going to be any better. It’s also going to be winter, the holidays. Maybe we should have a specific plan for the people coming off of unemployment. Say, government work plans for a while. Until the jobs come back.

Everyone including Repulsivecans hates Sadam Hussein and the Taliban for using human shields against advancing US military. I feel like I am being used as a human shield by Repulsivecan senators so that they can maintain their cushy lifestyles paid for by the very people they are screwing. Deficit, my ass. I find it absolutely the banks get bail outs, mortgagees, automotive manufacturers, but I have been out of wirk for 6 months, and receive a total of $100 in stimulus and $25 in unemployment, and the extension continuosly gets put off. I just hope when you idiots come to an agreement that pleases the citizens, the funds will be retroed. I have a BA and MBA and it doesn’t even matter…Being an African American Female in Alabama is an intimidation to employers, but for sure I know you all are not missing a dime of your money. If you could walk a week in my family’s shoes, you would have passed the extension first time around…Rest assured, you WILL NOT get my vote..don’t even call my number.
I have served in the US Army to preserve the rights and liberties of these United States of America and did it proudly like so many others before and after me. The politians in office that deny these basic rights are not Americans by any stretch if the imagination. They use their offices and power like dictators lying to us all and claiming to do what is best for the American citizens. In truth they only so what is in their own best interest not the people they swore to serve. If you do not uphold your duty you are then subject to have charges filed against you. These criminals have taken away OUR JOBS , OUR RIGHTS and commited crimes against the American people they swore to serve. There are people literally suffering and dying because if their uncaring inaction and it needs to be stopped. They have apparently forgotten their history lessons that the people can and will only take so much before they retaliate. The numbers of the lost, despreate and forgotten are increasing daily and that may become a very volitale situation for all of us. I hear more crime and violence on the news now and I think it is directly connected to the unemployment sitution and the acts of the desperate people effected by the jobless and unemployed. I think we all know deep inside that we will all do what it takes for our families to survive in the end. For those who think they are not effected by all of this they may want to remember that we didn’t see our sitution coming until it was too late too. The loss of homes,properties,savings,401k funds,vehicles, and dignity. Everythig that we have all worked for all of our lives is gone and then they say we are “lazy” and/or drug addicts also. Who could afford to be a drug addict on UC benefits?? What will it take for people to realize that something needs to be done? I would not put it past our government to resort to mass graves to cover themselves and make their numbers meet their standards at this point.

I am a 56 yr old Architect licensed in NY since 1990. I have been living down south for the last 5 yrs, where I cannot presently get a license as an Architect, because I do not have NCARB certification. I was No. 2 man in my last firm, from which I was laid off in October, 2008. My last project prior to being laid off was project manager for a 200,00 sq ft mixed-use Affordable Housing, Commercial and Artist live/work lofts in Asheville, NC, where I ran 6 intern architects to develop Construction Documents for the project. The Architect I worked for was very apologetic, but as he said, “I can hire 3 interns for your salary”, besides the fact there was no longer any work for the firm, and the last I heard still is not, as we are still on very good terms. I went from $80k to $25k unemployment practically overnight. I had been thru the recessions of 1990-91, and 2001-02, but this one looked much worse, and I have been proven right in that outlook, since we are now going into the 3rd year of this recession, with no end in sight. Architecture is always the 1st to go down and the last to come back in any recession, since there is little incentive to build. Given that, I moved out of my 1800 sq ft house, rented 2 rent-to-own storage sheds, and put them together to create a small(500 sq ft) house for myself and my wife to live in. I had some help from my parents for materials, and it is on land my mother owns, but I did all the work with my own 2 hands. It’s still not quite finished, but it is livable. I will pay off both sheds by January, at that point I will own them. The next thing I did was enroll at a prestigious Architectural school, to finish up the 42 credit hours I need to finish my NCARB certification so I can get my license here.I have completed 12 hrs of that, and enrolled for another 12 hrs this fall and spring semesters. By the time I finish I will owe about $40k in student loans, but I will have advanced my education, and by the time I finish hopefully the economy turns around. I guess my point is that instead of simply sitting around and collecting unemployment, I have been proactive in changing my lifestyle to get thru this crises. I just finished Tier 3 of my unemployment benefits, this is the last week. If Congress does not pass this I can’t move on to Tier 4. That means that we will have to live on my wife’s income of $1000/month, which barely covers our basic bills. I’m not sure how we will live going forward if congress does not pass the extension, but I’m sure it is going to seriously affect my ability to study effectively. I guess the point of this post is sometimes I get tired of hearing the moaning all the time instead of people being proactive and trying to cope with the situation. I can’t imagine having children, that would be horrible.

My job was lost due to the corporation I worked for 20yrs sending my job to India. I am 64 and finding it difficult to get even an interview. I paid into unemployment for 48 yrs and never filed a claim before. As a member of the middle class and a registered Independent voter I’ll be watching who voted to bail out big business and is failing to help middle class citizens in their time of need. Politicians need to cut spending but not at the expense of starving Americans.
I agree with everyones comments on this post and congress is in for a surprise when election time comes the American people are fed up and will not vote for them. We deserve our unemployment we worked for it and they gave it away to help out the banks and car industry. They sent our jobs out of the U.S.A and forgot about us. That is very sad. We have people starving and homeless here at home but our government always wants to help other countries and forgets about their own people. How SAD is that??????
