Unemployment Extension: Senate Readys For Aug 6 Month-Long Recess

By James Fox on July 14, 2010, 3:10 pm

The Senate is working way too hard to increase their own coffers and help the banks and corporations get richer. They burn the midnight oil searching for ways to destroy the proletariat in this country and profess to be helping to control the deficit. On August 6th, they will be taking a month long recess while the majority of Americans struggle to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. Heartless is too kind a word to describe these people.

Economic Crisis

This country is facing the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. In fact, if the economists would admit it, we are in a depression now and not a recession. The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) caused millions of jobs to be shipped overseas. No longer do we base our economy on manufacturing. We import almost everything we use in this country and a nation that depends on imports is treading down a dangerous economic path. With the loss of millions of jobs, we have created an unemployment Armageddon.

The Forgotten

Millions of Americans are desperately looking for work and a way to survive. The backbone of this nation is the American worker. Yet they are being forgotten and denied the basics of humanity. It seems our Congress is filled with Scrooges especially on the Republican side of the aisle. They talk a good game when it comes time to get reelected but all they seem to do is talk.

Unemployment Insurance

Unemployment insurance passed in 1935 by Franklin Delano Roosevelt along with Social Security, is the cushion workers need in those times when they may become unemployed. Roosevelt realized that the workers and their families needed to be taken care of and with his “New Deal Program”, he created unemployment insurance and jobs. The worker pays into the program while they are working and if they should become unemployed, they will receive a percentage of those funds for a time while they are looking for another job. They must keep a record of contacts made and each state has a required minimum of employers they must call on weekly.

Money, The Middle Class And The Poor

It is apparent to Congress that money is the new God. When it comes to greed and power, money is the catalyst. It is the people who have control over those who do not that wield the big stick.. The middle class and the poor can only ride on this roller coaster and when the ride finally stops will they still be on.

For the record, I am an unemployed American. Just looking at the BIG PICTURE here:

    - I believe unemployment benefits should be extended for a maximum of 52 weeks per person, no exceptions. One year, on the government’s nickel (26 weeks on the State, 26 weeks on the Fed), that’s it!

    - I also believe the money for continuing UC extensions should come from the existing stimulus package.

At some point this Administration & Congress HAS to become fiscally responsible. UC extension legislation unfortunately is coming on the heels of an unprecidented government spending spree. It has to stop sometime! Some folks will be left out when belts get tightened. Every American has to tote their share of the load, before the load bankrupts us all !!!!

Hey Senators, Bet you can’t wait for your next vacation beginning August 6th. You scumbags don’t deserve the perks that you get. You care nothinga about the situation you are prolonging. Millions will lose everything while you are enjoying your vacation. Hey, didn’t you just get a vacation? Oh well, nothing’s too good for you! Take another one at the expense of the unemployed. We all hope that you die!

If the Congress had to live without any income for only a short time maybe they would realize that many are losing everything because of the lack of jobs and the lack of support from our government. Most don’t want to try to live on unemployment but the jobs are not there.

When a man falls overboard of a ship the people on deck do not waste time arguing over the cost or if doing so will be beneficial to the whole ship or not, they throw the lifeline right away because that is the right and humane thing to do. Well many millions of Americans need a lifeline because they are sinking economically. I lost my job of ten years due to the recession. I try but can not find a job. My unemployment benefits have run out. I served six years in the military. I have worked and paid taxes all my life. Now that I need a helping hand from my country I am being told “NO” by certain lawmakers who have very good paying jobs and are in need of nothing. If these lawmakers had to endure the next several months with no money to live and could not pay their bills, they would have a very different viewpoint. Do they not get the profound importance of all this? We are drowning while they argue! What they are doing is shameful. These are Americans denying fellow Americans the very basic needs of life. They have the nerve to go on vacation and live the good life then come back and continue to argue instead of helping we Americans in distress while we worry about losing our cars and our homes. We won’t even have enough money for gas to continue to look for work. The job market is still terrible. We need that extension to the point our lives depend on it. All the experts agree that it would also stimulate the economy. There has got to be a compromise that both parties can agree on. If we got only another 26 weeks and not the full 99 that would help a great deal and give us hope for finding work. Somebody has got to do something or this is no longer the America we Vets fought for.

We complain but do nothing about it! Yes these heartless congress people will go on their vacation without a care in the world. For the first time in their tenure they have earned their eleborate pay. These people work for us and should keep their nose-to-the-grind stone at ALL times! Their salary-increases should not be automatic, but from a vote from the American people. I understand that the automatic salary increase is a Constitutional law, this law should be amended. The Constitution is no longer abided anymore(by them). What happen to Social Security, didn’t it fall within the constitution law? It was not be used for anything other than what it was intended for. Former Presidents & Congress have been biting more & more from the Social Security pot, and Oh! all of a sudden they declare social security is going broke. What a crock, they are the ones creating all this mess!! We should fire all of them. Wake up people, we elected them!! They work for you they represent you in Washington!! We should all unite and congregate on the doorsteps in Washington and let our voices be heard!!
