The only mention I have heard of the 99ers has been via two short blips on Fox News. Both seemed to be trying to goad us into rioting. This country is on a fast track to destruction. I believe the only unemployment extension we are going to see is for those who have exhausted their benefits at 26 weeks. Tier 5 is not even a vague thought in the backs of our so called representatives’ minds.
Illegal Immigrants Before American Citizens
However, once again Washington appears to be disjointed. If we are talking about the Dream Act before the unemployment extension, doesn’t that show that “illegal immigrants” no matter how unfortunate their condition, are more important to Congress than the millions of Americans who will be impacted by the expiration of the unemployment extension.
Unemployment Continues To Rise
So what was the effect of the blocked bill on current 99ers? There wasn't any. But the effect on current jobless numbers is markedly different, because once the unemployment extensions end on Dec. 1, the number of 99ers will begin to grow as the unemployed who might have been eligible for continued benefits will find themselves cut off from benefits due to lack of congressional funding.
What Makes Sense
& Tier 5 Makes Sense? Does the unemployment extension make sense, in light of balancing the federal budget? Recently, a deficit panel looked at ways where the US could tighten her belt, therefore making the country, as a whole, more financially stable.
Lame Duck Session
The Lame Duck session is a dangerous time for an unemployment extension. I am truly hoping that the extension of at least the benefits currently in place will be the first thing on the docket. Then, I would like to think that the 99ers would get relief, as a Tier 5 extension is needed. The Stabenow bill would give 20 additional weeks of unemployment, which would be a fantastic Christmas present to the American people.

People like to vote against Democrats today and this is what you get, a mess, just like a few years ago when this whole mess started under Buschy.
I agree. I will run out of my UI benefits Dec 14. I agree to extending the current benefits. I do feel bad for the people who are having so much trouble finding a job.
Congress ( as usual) is out of touch with reality. They have no problem :
1) Bailing out Wall street Criminals ( who actually intensified the melt down of our economy).
2) Giving billions of dollars to the auto industry.
3) Putting the “rights” of ILLEGAL ALIENS before the rights of American citizens.
A) Press “1″ for English–WHICH IS BULLSHIT.
4) Giving billions of dollars to other countries–who then turn around and hate us.
The list goes on and on and on and on.
I am in my 60′s and have not worked in 2 1/2 years. Recruitment firms refuse to send me on job interviews as I am over 60.
Yes 99 + weeks of Unemployment benefits is a long time —but the economy sucks.
Unfortunately our government has always had their own welfare at the top of any to do list. If it benefits them then it is a go but if it hinders them in any way then it isn’t even considered. And that is what has been happening with the 99ers and getting a tier 5 as well as regular unemployment extensions. They are still working as if it was 10-15 years ago and what once worked for the unemployment will not work now as times have changed and there are too many unemployed. They do not want to jeapardize their monies coming to them and all the perks so rather than deal with a way to salvage all of us they ignore us and continue with their old ways. So out of site out of mind. What is sad is that they really do not want to help us in any way. They would rather let all these people lose everything they have than give them some assistance. They keep trying to make the country believe that the economy is getting better and that there are jobs for all out there but this is just another way that they get around from doiong anything. Why is it that what we say and feel doesn’t count but whatever they say does even if it isn’t true? Se are so much in dire need that we are unable to really fight back. They know that we have no means to do anything as we are literally on our last penney and we have no big lobbyist on the hill to wheel and deal. We have no movie stars taking on our cause or government handouts like they do for everyone else in the world. Of the jobs out there they are now requiring credit checks so you tell me what person who is on their last leg has good credit now? So again all those supposed jobs out there do not go to any of us. How do we win? How do we get a chance? How do we survive? How so we get the government to listen to us and how do we get them to realize that this problem is not going away any time soon and how are they going to handle so many people being put out in the cold with no help,money,food or anything. It is just unbelievable that we have been forced to live (if you call it live)like this in this day and age.

I am a 150′er. Way past the 99 weeks and still haven’t landed a job. I have lost everything though, my job, my family, my hope. According to congress, I’m lazy and because I collected UI benefits it hinders me from working well that’s shot to s*** now isn’t it? Believe me if I could work I would. I would’ve loved to feed my family, have a full nights sleep in a warm bed and a hot shower but instead I’m writing this from a public library(which limits me to 30 minutes) and searching garbage cans in the back of fast food places just to eat. I would go to a shelter but they’re all full and actually turning away people. Congress is right, I’m a waste of life right now but at one time I was a proud American who paid their taxes and funded his own life, now I’m out of unemployment(for over 45 weeks now) and still jobless. So now what congress? People like me need help and we need it now not after you’re done with your holidays. Mine will consist of trying to find a warm spot under my towns bridge and hope the police don’t throw me out from there. Heartless bastards!!!!!!!
There is no hope! There is no “American Dream”
I hope that the Congress and Senate enjoy their holiday break while I am busy explaining to our kids why Happy Christmas won’t be this year.
A note to the Righty: you think I prefer to sit on my butt, bored to death and wait for the next check – how out touch are you? I’d take up a new hobby in addition to constant application and interview processes but can’t afford one.
Any evolved human knows that it is a matter of well being to be productive and feel that they are able to provide for your family. I poured almost 10 years of my life into a now failed small business. My wife, who’s always worked hasn’t been able to find anything viable for almost 2 years.
Oh, one final thought… for all of you who want to blame the black guy, wake up! You should’ve made you VOTE count during mid-terms, or, maybe you did and simply don’t give a rats ass about anyone other than yourself.

The media is big part of problem for unemployed. They think that 407 new claims is a sharp drop Not! Sure it dropped but still 407,000 new claims is big add to the growing number of unemployed in this country. When UI drops from well above 9% to a more normal 6% or lower than we can say things like a sharp drop. We all want good news but the number of long term unemployed keeps growing as UI stays so high now for years. There are not enough jobs being created to employee the millions of jobs lost.
Does the unemployment extension make sense, in light of balancing the federal budget?
Well yes but until many other budget items are cut they have no basis to call extensions a budget deficit issue. Not when they are giving away under foreign aid 93 million. Worry and debate how that is paid for. Americans come first it is our money. Congress is arguing over UI extensions instead of holding up foreign aid first. Sorry cannot tell me its a money issue when not making it same for so many other spending areas first.
Why is it that we who are hurting are expected to tough it out and cut back? What haven’t we cut back on so far? We have nothing left to cut back on. Why is it that our congress doesn’t cut back as well for themselves. Do you ever hear them say that we don’t need weeks off for every holiday that comes around? Do you ever hear them say we can take a pay cut to help out? Do you ever hear them say that they will cut back on foreign aid because right now our own are hurting and we need to help them now? Do you ever hear them say that they will give anything to help the poor and deprived in our country? No we NEVER hear them say any of those things. They expect us to do all the cutting back and be thrifty while they expect everything to be given to them no matter what the cost. How is this a fair system? Our government needs to be by the people not the rich elite who are for themselves only. Our country is going to contine on this downward spiral because we have and are selling out to foreign countries and it is a business where only the rich can play and wheel and deal. The rest of the people do not count and we are expected to go along with whatever they want. How sad for our forefathers to look down at this mess. How sad for us that we have been deceived by our government for all these years. Worse and sad days are fast approaching and our government knows this, knows what is really coming down and what is going to happen. Why do you think that they are looking to grab all the money they can for themselves as the end is near and they want to save themselves first and foremost. The hell with the rest of us. History repeats itself.

here in Miami there is 1 job for every 8 citizens,and its getting worst as each day passes. When will the government be brought to justice for there crimes? I agree with Fed Up. I am a 140′r not a 99er. Ran out of benefits in March, since then 2 part time jobs 1 mo here and then laid off and then 3 months there and then a budget cut. I have worked since 16, owned my own business contributed to society and now, put in so many app’s I can’t even believe it. I constantly doubt myself and feel useless. I am the middle class. We are the throw away workers. The government pretends if they don’t acknowledge the unemployed they don’t really exist, after all we are the reminder that the recession still very much exists and the powers that be want to go on their 20th vacation this year to celebrate in their oppulant lifestyles and us strugglers down here well you guys just wing it!! If we are in need of money and Obama wants to spread the wealth why not cut all holiday pay and everyone pay their own health care and put the money into unemployment extension and job creation. It is all about JOBS now and nothing else. No aid to foreign countries. JOBS, geeesh, get it? Ironically the ones who are hired to work on job creation have jobs so they don’t feel it, they don’t care.

I am sorry to say that the extension will not be added. The Republicans nor the democrats want an extension. The United States Government cannot add enough jobs, so Extensions are not the answer. A Tier 5 will not happen because in Washington it doesn’t make sense. Also they have stated that the unemployment rate is @ 9.6% but, we all know that it is around 15% to 25%. Due to the fact that if a Tier 5 was allowed the real numbers would come out and the Democrats nor the Republicans want the rest of the American people to see that they are really in the wrong on how they have treated the Unemployed Americans.
I didn’t vote because the Tea Party really screwed up. They voted Republican and didn’t want any more Democrats in the House or in Congress. We can sit here and pray but, we all know that our prayers will not be answered. I am sorry that our Christmas is going to suck this year next year and so forth until we get a job. I wish it was back in the 90′s when it was so easy to get a job and where so many fortune 100 and 500 companies were hiring not laying off. This is what alot of people do not understand. And, this is what alot of Americans do not understand. 90% of the people that are on unemployment got LAID OFF. the other 10% got Fired or had to resign from their position.

I have been out of work for nearly two years. Ive been told by retail stores that I was over qualified. WTF?! I need a job. My unemployment ran out today. My last payment of 66.00 dollars came. Thats it. Done.

No give on the GOP so they say the Dems caused the homelessness and big budgets. The Dems pass the tax cuts for the rich trying to show they will work with the GOP; and bank foreclosure bailouts continue. So while this develops the price of gas goes to $7-$9 because China has money for its 2 billion people to afford petroleum transportation. Gas goes up 50% more because OPEC looks after themselves. China and India use more petroleum since they have the market structure to keep their petroleum transportation repaired and rolling on the streets.
Washington is trying to fix the petroleum problem through Cap & Trade. Both parties have different ideas for Energy production and the US is in limbo.
Worse case scenario Washington is all or nothing for each Party and NOT for the US.

The freaking media is reporting all over the place today that initial unemployment claims dropped to 407K – their lowest level since 2008.
What the morons of ABC, CNN, MSNBC, Reuters, and Associated Press do not mention is the fact that this is due to the holiday help that is hired temporarily. How stupid can these media morons be? They talk about the unemployment claims dropping as if they are trying to set the tone that we do not need to extend UI benefits assistance to the long-term unemployed.
Americans wake up! Do not listen to the media clowns telling us that the labor market is improving. This is only because of the holiday hiring. We are all in for a rude awakening coming January and February when all the extra joliday help gets laid off…That is when unemployment will really shoot up to 11%!
Call your representatives, march (peacefully) flood them with emails and letters to keep the pressure on extending UI benefits including passing TIER 5 until the morons in Congress and our President figure hoe to create new jobs for all of us and until the REAL unemployment rate drops to at least 7.5%. Back in August, the Obama administrations was asking for expanded aid to Pakistan (as if we do not already gime them enough of our billions – our tax money). I am sad and disillusioned. I’ve been told since I was a child that if I did what was right and worked hard I would achieve the American Dream. The American Dream is nothing but an American Nightmare. I’ve worked my butt off my entire life and what do I get? Told I’m lazy and don’t want to try to get a job by the government. UI benefits aren’t about getting presents for Christmas. For me it is about BASIC SURVIVAL. I’ve been told that if I get thrown out of my apartment that there is an abandoned hotel where they are allowing homeless people to move in. I’m certain they aren’t providing electricity, water, etc. to the people that are living there. How can you find a job if you can’t pay for soap to take a bath to make yourself presentable? How can you find a job even if you can’t present yourself in a respectable way? I think they want to make us all slaves so that they can have control over us. If something doesn’t happen soon there are going to be alot of people going into “survival” mode. U.S. Gov’t. – let your imaginations go wild on that idea. You like to make up B.S. all the time to make everyone afraid – well, this is something that could be REAL.
11 years ago I came to this country for a better life. I learned English, I got my masters degree, I did everything to succeed. Now what ? Unemployed, counting every penny, cannot find job etc. do I need this B.S. in my life ? No way. I’m considering leaving. Carol, you should email the President saying exactly what you just said, except, instead of saying, “what are they going to do about…”, say, “what are YOU…”. But there is one thing you can do…
You may be able to get Christmas Bonus, the one-off tax-free 10 payment made before Christmas. This is normally paid automatically to those customers getting a qualifying benefit in the qualifying week and who meet the residency conditions.
Who is eligible?

My name is Ann… and yes…I am a 99er. A 31 year VP commercial banker that has had to declare bankruptcy (and no…traditional bankers are not the cause of our current dilema!) As many of you may not know when a banker such as myself declares bankruptcy you can no longer be bonded thus making the only career I have had in my life impossible. I have paid a butt load of taxes over the years and now feel like I am a freeloader. Not all 99ers are lazy. I have applied for all kinds of entry level jobs to no avail.
If congress does not pass the extensions along with help for the 99ers – they better prepare themselves for a World war 4.

This country has moulded us to be Americans and that is what we are. Nothing less. They can never take that away from us. In answer to unemployed. America is no place to be ashamed of, and I certainly am not because of a handful of rotten Republicans. The people make up America, not politicians. They are suppose to be there for the people. Americans don’t run away from problems, we face it like we are doing here and that is what makes us a great Nation. We lost a lot of good people oversees protecting our homelands. There once was such a thing as the American Dream which always took very hard work. My Dad was in the Marines and he came out and worked as a mechanic for years and employed people in Town. He was lucky to get a small business loan when he got out of the service and years later down the road he was able to make his hardwork turn into a reality and realized his goals. That wasn’t an easy ride for him, or anyone. But even at that point, there is always someone ready to take it away. There is always a battle. I think Americans have that concept of what we have to do. But no one is going to say Shame on America and get away with it. This group of Republican millionaires are making sure we have bad credit, no assets, no homes nothing to support our goals to build our dreams and make it a reality. God forbid if we have more than they do. We have to get back. A small group of people are dividing us and trying to control us. We won’t let that happen. Our future is in the hands of our children and they deserve the best fight from us to preserve our freedoms.
You would think one of these people, for instance, George Clooney, who wins a humanitarian award but does nothing to stand up for the people right now that need support would show his face. One wonders when we will stand up as they did in France a few weeks ago. When will we stand up to our rich overlords and say ENOUGH!!! What happened to Obama’s comments awhile back when he said “Now is not the time for profits”. What happened? From everything I have read profits have never been higher, bailout loans paid back with interest, corporate profits at record highs. Meanwhile just about every post I read Americans face homelessness. I have also read a number of sites that are predicting a second Great Depression in 2011. At first I thought it was a bit of nonesense, now I am starting to believe it.

The simple truth is that the disparity of wealth is growing ever wider day by day and there is very little opportunity for what were the working class to ever remotely recover…it’s more like survival mode at this point. Truth is, there is no real recovery happening because there is no real economy with respect to production. The economy today is fake…it’s being propped up and cannot sustain itself without expanding the deficit..and that’s trouble with a capital T. The spending cuts proposed are smoke and mirrors…for the hole is to deep. 30 years of over consumption, public and private, have left us with nothing but a 10 to 15 year hangover to look forward to..the damage is that deep. Others can say whatever they want and paint rosey pictures..but in the final analysis it won’t amount to spit in a river. The debt we will eventually end up defaulting on will be the final blow…and it’s coming..no matter what propaganda you hear..other countries are telling us this. America used to be the land of opprotunity, and to a degree for now, it still is..but for only a select few and for a limited time only. The tip off will be when other countries start the sell off of US bonds…and it’s coming for they can see that we can no longer manage our economic affairs. The only real question is how will the populace handle this when we the truth begins to appear..revolt? Perhaps. Yet they haven’t been pushed hard enough yet but mark my words…it’s coming..regardless of what others say.
Since I was 16 years old, I maintained parttime or full time employment to pay for my education. I even paid “out of pocket” for my MBA. I thought that would protect me from the forthcoming layoffs. I was completely wrong. I was laid off January, 2010. At 47 yo, I have never felt so expendable or useless. Experience, knowledge and skill mean nothing to the greedy corporation. I watch and submit my resume to every possible job board and employment site available. I’ve gone out of my way to network and make connections, wherever possible. This has only led frustration and aggrevation.
My last job had a wonderful six figure income that paid into a system that, now, refuses to reimburse me for my contributions for the last 30 years!
I use to believe in the kindness and generosity of the American people. Unfortunately, that has been replaced by hoarding, greed and gluttony. Canada is looking better by the day.
The only way to stop these career politicians is to install term limits. Its become a position of absolute power and its corporative powers. Its no longer about serving this country its about serving themselves!
The GOP are so protective of their rich comrades that they may only consider letting the Tier 5 passed. However, the Dems are not even looking after the welfare of the hungry 99′ers! Wow. Just when you think your life is tough you come read some of these comments. Yeah, I’m a 99-er. Just ran out of UI benefits about three weeks ago. I’m trying to start my own business and I will do seasonal work on other people’s taxes (a job that never runs out).
I’m lucky that I have a husband who still has his job. We get to keep our house and land and can feed our grandson who lives with us. We grow a lot of our own food, so that’s a help.
Screaming at Congress and the President is not working. I’m going to start praying for all of you who are worse off than I am. And SHAME on all of you who even jokingly say we are lazy.

I have been unemployed and exhausted my benefits, but yet everyday I send out between 30-50 resumes with no response.
I am single and borrowing money just to keep the heat and electric on. I am one month from having my home foreclosed on. I am losing everything after working for over 35 years and never asking for any help at all. I beg congress to come to the rescue of Americans who have supported this country only to treated like outcasts and “lazy bums” who don;t want to work. Give me a job ANY job, I need to make money!

I cannot believe how our elected officials can debate whether a tier 5 extension is needed. Hello”", when the unemployment rate keeps going up that means there is a continued need for unemployment compensation to help with Oh I don’t know gas for the car so we can go to job interviews. I am 53 and have been unemployed since dec 2008 and it is driving me crazy. I have moved in with my son and daughter-in-law (well up to 2 weeks ago it was my son and daughter-in-law now it is just my son since his wife left with the 3 kids to move in with her father so the kids would have some kind of christmas. My son is a full time college student and works full time in a restaurant, so not a whole lot of money there. I have signed up for government grants so I too can go back to school, but then again this takes time to process. These politicians who have 2 or 3 homes and drive mercedes and who vote themselves substantial raises every year should lose everything be put into a shelter and dig through garbage cans for their next meal, maybe then they will develop a compassion for the unemployed and destitute.
