Unemployment: Nearly One-Third Of March Jobs From Temp Census Workers
By Susan Thompson on April 4, 2010, 8:30 amOn Friday, Obama announced a steady increase in the number of jobs, noting that the US is “Turning the corner” in the job market. A gain of over 130,000 new jobs was bright news for the American people and the economy. The US has steadily been gaining new workers, with 50,000 new workers hired per month. The new report also noted that over 33% of these new jobs were taken by temporary workers.
Experts Opinions
Experts say that we can expect the economy to stabilize within “a few years”, but until both the housing market and job market have completely stabilized, the economy will remain steadily in recession. Undocumented workers are unrecorded in the census by the Labor Department, so it is truly impossible to know what the true job growth is per month, but it is estimated that anywhere from 20,000-40,000 new undocumented workers gain jobs each month was well, which means that the US could be gaining over 70,000-100,000 new jobs per month.
Presidential Emphasis
The President continued to emphasize the importance of his new healthcare plan, stating that it will not only help to lower costs, but spur interest in the medical field, and make primary care a more viable career option. Over 5% of the new job growth from 2010 is expected to be within the medical field, and over 40% of that growth will be comprised of primary care doctors. Manufacturing jobs will compose less than 2% of the national job growth from 2010, with the medical and electronic industries contributing the largest number of new jobs.
The drop in the amount of manufacturing jobs is a result of multinational corporations outsourcing to different nations for cheaper manufacturing work. The PRC (People’s Republic of China), on the other hand, claims that over 90% of their new jobs last year were manufacturing titles. The economy is gradually improving in the United States, but it will be a few years until the recession subsides.
