Will America Soon Have Only The Conservative And Progressive Parties?
By Donald Griffith on February 6, 2010, 4:10 pmThere are those who believe that our Republican and Democratic parties will instead become liberal and conservative parties. Similar to the Whigs giving way to the Republican Party in the mid-19th. century. They have in fact become mostly liberal and conservative parties, but have kept the name Republican and Democrat all the same.
The Democratic Party Is Liberal, The Republican Party Is Conservative
From now on we will have a conservative and progressive party. The Republicans will be the conservatives and the Democrats the progressives. In the not too distant future the moderates will leave the Democratic Party for the Republican party. The moderate Republicans will join the Democratic party. The names of the parties will remain the same. Their ideologies will become hardened. After the next presidential election this will become more or less fact.
Same Old Parties Will Remain
No matter how exciting it would be to have parties actually representing ideals, the truth must be faced. Every time there is a third party, one of the major parties suffer. President Wilson was elected in 1912 because Teddy Roosevelt’s Bull Moose Party split the vote giving the election to the Democrats. Recently Ralph Nader was accused of losing the election for Al Gore, but this charge is more difficult to prove.
The fear among third party sympathizers is that if there is a third party, one of the major parties will face certain doom. The Tea Party advocates know well, that if they run a third party conservative candidate, this will guarantee President Obama’s reelection. If for argument’s sake the Left decided that they would run a progressive candidate because of Obama’s betrayal, the Republican nominee’s chances would greatly increase. Instead the disenchanted will switch parties.
Third Party Threats Not Taken Seriously
Both the Democrats and Republicans know well the days of a major third party (there are many splinter parties running all the time) are a thing of the past. The threats by Tea Party members and progressives need not be taken seriously because the time of a real third party like that of John Anderson are gone. The third party runs are now relegated to history books for history majors in college. The changes will soon be here, in that the American people will know for certain that a vote for a Republican is a vote for a conservative. And, a vote for a Democrat is a vote for a liberal.

Why not call it like it really is and call the 2 parties “The Have’s” and “The Have Not’s “
The Democratic Party is not liberal. The Progressive Causus is liberal. The Progressive Caucus should be encouraged to form its own Party.
